I just found out he was a deer, all this time I thought he was a goat ;-;

I thought he was based off the African gazelle. Hence, you know, Zell. They're a member of the deer and horse family, and have a similar facial coloring.

Actually, Deer and Horses do not share a family -- Deer and creatures like antelopes and gazelles, as well as most of our domestic livestock like cows, goats, and sheep are in the family Bovidae, while horses are in Equidae. If it's a grazing animal that's got a hoof that's split down the middle into two equal halves, it's probably a bovid; if it's a grazing animal that has a single-toed hoof (so, like, a donkey or zebra or the like; there's not a lot of these), it's definitely an equid, and if we're talking taxonomy, the two don't have anything in common than both being mammals.
Back to Zell, I'm with Loviechu: He's probably modeled after a Blackbuck. Not only are the markings about right, but so are the antlers. Which, by the way...
Can I just stop for a second to gush about how much I love the antlers on the deer? I mean, wowza. Every male deer gets his own model for his antlers, and when the deer/antelope has a specific real-world inspiration, the antlers are appropriate and that's just really fantastic. It's just a level of attention to detail that makes me go "You know, someone really cared about this."

Lol, seriously though, they are beautiful. I can see how you thought he was a goat, kinda. But it wouldn't have been my first impression. Maybe that's cuz I love the deer in this game, so I pay extra attention to their features.
