Does anyone else hate that you can't choose your pronouns?

This is originally a game localized from Japanese, and Japanese doesn't really use pronouns like English does. I actually like "they/them" since your character can be entirely gender-neutral if you want.

tbh it never really bothered me, but that’s probably because i don’t care about a lot of things. they can call me xe/xir for all i care

fwiw, other translations use the correct pronouns for your character. even romance languages, which are heavily gendered, refer to your character with the appropriate pronouns and gendered adjectives. so I think the English translation definitely could've managed as well. this seems more like a conscious choice than anything, and I personally don't agree with that choice because not everyone is okay with being called "they". I know it would bother me
Please tell me that the TERF vibes I get from the bolded is just me thinking too much.
we're just randomly accusing people of belonging to hate groups now huh lol

It's just you thinking too much. Point is that I'm straight and not okay with being called "they".

Now you're just confusing me even more. Typically people who prefer to be called by 'they/them' pronouns are coming from a gender identity standpoint, not a sexual orientation standpoint. Being straight, bi, lesbian has nothing to do with it. I'm non-straight, but that doesn't change my pronouns.

Nope. "Normal female" is a weird phrasing, not too far off from "Adult Human Female" which TERFs are known to have said. Sometimes these phrases are dog whistles. I never said "TERF ALERT!" or anything like that, I said "Please confirm my vibes from what you said are incorrect.".

I'm a cis female and use she/her pronouns but it doesn't bother me at all, and I'm glad the game chose a gender neutral pronoun. I think its nice that they don't assume anything, and I don't feel the need to tell the game my gender

Maybe I'm just being confusing as you mentioned, I'm straight as in I was born a girl, I am a girl, and I like the gender nature intended, I have nothing against people who are different than that. I meant normal female as in once again, liking the gender nature intended, I phrased it horribly wrong.

Yeah I am a trans woman, and I was even beginning to wonder if you'd classify me as a "abnormal girl" or "artificial girl" or "unnatural" which really triggers me, because I WISH I WAS BORN FEMALE! Just try to not use "normal" when in relation to gender, being as there are those of us who wish we could be "Normal" but never will be, and it is a trigger.

Yeah, I realized that and I was trying to not offend anyone, I'll try to not use it anymore 😅

If I recall correctly the Japanese version of the game has you choose a gender at the start as opposed to a style, so they would have had to add a pronoun thing just for the English release.

I personally love the gender neutral direction the English release took, but I suppose if you're not used to being called "they" it might feel a bit weird.
Additionally, in Japanese it is rare to use pronouns in speech. The personal pronoun ‘I’ is highly gendered (an each personality type uses a different word for I which allows you to instantly identify their type). But playing the game in Japanese, none of the characters use the words that would translate to ‘he or she’ when talking about other character or visitors. The closest they use is they say ‘ano Ko’ which roughly translates to ‘that kid/person’. So as you say, it would have to have been specially added for English. Lack of pronoun choice is much more noticeable in English than in Japanese.

Not to butt in on this conversation, but just so you know "nature" didn't decide you gender, humans did. From a scientific standpoint, gender is a social construct, while your sex referring to your reproductive organs is entirely different. We as a society created the concept of "gender" by assigning certain characteristics and pronouns to people based on their body parts.

I’m trans and my family has been struggling to use the right pronouns for me since I came out to them over 10 years ago, opting instead to use “they” because it’s a comfortable way for them to not outright misgender me but Also not acknowledge my gender by respectfully using the right pronouns.

The animals referring to me with ”they” kind of dredges up those feelings even if
1.) it’s fake animals in a video game so it shouldn't bug me
2.) it’s probably great for nonbinary folks whose pronouns are almost constantly not an option in games, so I have mixed feelings about it.

Ultimately, though, i do wish we had the option to choose.

I never noticed this in the game and it doesn't bother me in the slightest.

Those saying it's wrong or misgendering - 'they' has been used as a singular pronoun to refer to someone who's gender is unknown or irrelevant since at least the 1300s, it's not just for non-binary folks. Do you also dislike being referred to by the genderless pronoun 'you'? That was also a plural pronoun that came to be used in the singular.
Without checking a guide I often have no idea whether the animals in my town are male or female and I'm fine with them not knowing mine either!

It is literally misgendering to be referred to with an incorrect pronoun but go off I guess

I'm personally not really bothered by the animals using they, even though I use she/her. I hardly see them talking about me, rather than to me, anyways. But I can see how it could be a bit bothersome, so the option to choose would be really nice.

I totally understand why it would bother you and I'm sorry it brings up those feelings for you in what should be a fun carefree game! This is a good reason for them to provide a choice, but I think they probably had good intentions when they made the decision to use they.
