It's to be expected. Christmas is one of the most profitable times of year especially for the gaming industry, so they all strive to get their big releases (whether consoles or games from their most profitable franchises) out at this time of year. If they think it can compete against other big sellers rather than getting overlooked then yes they'll put it out there.
Usually there aren't more than a couple of titles I'm interested in around Christmas, but since September I've found prioritising game purchases to be particularly difficult. This year, the releases that I've been deliberating over are:
2014.09.19 - Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy Curtain Call (3DS)
2014.09.19 - Hyrule Warriors (Wii U)
2014.09.26 - Fantasy Life (3DS)
2014.10.03 - Super Smash Bros. 4 3DS (3DS) -> I've already sold this game.
2014.10.24 - Bayonetta 1 + 2 (Wii U)
2014.11.21 - Assassin's Creed Rogue (PS3)
2014.11.21 - Watch Dogs (Wii U)
2014.11.28 - Super Smash Bros. 4 Wii U (Wii U)
2014.11.28 - Pok?mon Alpha Sapphire (3DS)
2014.12.05 - Kingdom Hearts 2.5 (PS3)
2015.01.02 - Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (Wii U)

* still trying to decide whether or not to preorder.
* decided not to buy at release.
Definitely feeling the urge to play something new, but not sure what to go with just yet. I started playing
Assassin's Creed Black Flag on the Xbox One yesterday, but looks like I'm going to have to give up with it already because while I was writing this my Dad's just told me he's getting
Assassin's Creed Unity today. The Xbox One is his so I can't exactly complain.
