I've been toying with the idea of picking up a Japanese DS and AC game for a few months now. Hoping it will give me practice reading while still enjoying my favourite game.

Who plays the Japanese version? :)

DS or 3DS? because Wild World is region free, like the vast majority of all other DS games (I think only a small handful of DSi labeled ones were region locked)

3DS.

Hmm. I was hoping to play the Japanese version so I could practice reading in Japanese. I don't think my NA DS has Japanese as a language option.

Japanese import DS games will just default to Japanese language for the games (assuming there are any other language options to begin with), and will also run fine on any 3DS system, regardless of your own region or system language settings

but if running a Japanese imported New Leaf copy, you'll obviously have to import a Japanese 3DS (or 2DS) system, due to region locking nonsense

obviously up to you what you want to do, but if just using Animal Crossing as a tool for practicing/learning I'd probably recommend Wild World more. of course you wouldn't be able to have the online interaction due to Wi-fi services having been cut, and its far more primitive in terms of graphics and design capabilities (though I'd argue better for actual villager interactions and personalities), but only real way I could see getting another 3DS system would be worth it is if you have a sizable number of Japanese-only 3DS games you're interested in that have little to no chance of coming over to where you are for one reason or another

In Wild World if you set the language on your DS (personally ik this works on the DS lite) thats the language the animals speak. I found this out when I was like eight and set my language to french to see what would happen

Thanks for the advice LambdaDelta!

I will look into obtaining Wild World, it sounds like it might be a bit more cost effective too.

I've been using italki to practise my Japanese and while browsing the instructor profiles, I saw one instructor claims he learned a lot of Japanese from playing video games. I didn't end up using him (I cannot comment on how effective his method is). His profile made me think it might be a fun way to practise my reading comprehension and possibly learn some new kanji.

This should answer your question

Yes, I have their region systems too. I HIGHLY recommend it for Kansai region Japanese- as my Kanto region sensei quite often points out!!

oideyo (Wild World) is still in Japanese on English systems.
