I play with the game volume on, except for when I am watering my flowers or collecting manila clams to craft some fish bait. Both these tasks take so long that I actually enjoy them more if I am listening to some music.
I think the sound design in this game is pretty good so I play with the volume on. A lot of people have complained about the soundtrack but I like it quite a lot.
100% Sound on for pre-upgraded-RS.
50% Sound on for hourly music. A lot of the daytime music is pretty bad in my opinion while the nighttime music is generally nice...except for 3am. I am not sure what happened there...
But yeah, with the exception of the 5am music, I found the pre-ugraded RS music so, so much nicer than the hourly music and wish I could have it back. Except that I reset my island, so I DO have it back once I start playing again, sooo...
But yeah, generally, sound needs to be on mainly for balloons.
i have the volume on at a pretty low level, enough so that i can hear certain cues (ie balloons) or faint music, but not so much that it distracts me from the videos i watch while i play!
I play this game with game volume on and headphones 99% of the time. Its sound design is very well suited to headphone players, so much so that I tend to play with headphones even with my Switch docked. Makes it far easier to pinpoint the exact location of balloons and insects. One criticism I have of this game is the music is a bit too present and I think they could've done something like equalized it differently to allow it to stay more in the background. Sometimes it's too present.
