It might not be ideal (now I realize I rather not have a stairwise river, but I'll work with it), but I've learned to work with it and I love it more and more.
The two houses behind my Mayor's house are plotted there naturally, no plot resetting done XD Fang and Chief, just lovely neighbours <3
I was map resetting for almost an entire week until last night. The more I reset, the more picky I got with my maps. A few times I would find a great map but there'd always be something that would mess it up and make me start again, such as unbreakable rocks being right in the spot I wanted to build my house, a villager I like being in a spot I wanted to put my campsite, wanting to put my house in a certain spot aligned in a certain way but Nook would never let me put it in that exact spot. Grass shapes, native town fruits and train station/mayors office colours never bothered me, so I wouldn't reset simply because I didn't like them.
The map I finally did pick just feels so good. I put my house in a great spot, my Re-Tail, mayors office and event plaza are all nice and close together and I have a nice big open space to decorate. Also the fact I will not build a police station this time around is something I'm happy about too.
