do you judge people by their grammar?

I'm trying to figure out how the two are related, since people who actually are racist tend to be the least comprehensible, not just in what they say, but how they say it. Not to say that racist people are incapable of typing properly or anything, but...really? If I could raise a singular eyebrow instead of both, I'd be doing that right now.

okay i admit what i posted was pretty stupid since the subjects aren't related at all but cmon no need to act like i comitted a crime or somethin

can we just end this pointless fight like
i wanna get back to trading and stuff and this is getting boring

I'm the kind of person that really doesn't like assumptions. If I'd said nothing there's a strong chance you wouldn't have acknowledged that maybe what you said wasn't exactly the best thing to say.

Generalizations about people based on their typing isn't the best idea, even if there are things that bother us about the way certain people type. Everyone's allowed to have things that bother them, within reason, but making generalizations can be offensive to people. I always try to be careful about that sort of thing, despite my pet peeves.

I had a gentleman at work tell me I should look into stock trading. He also told me he could send me an email explaining some basics, and for a small fee would work as a broker.

I was interested... but then I got an email from him.

Some quotes (I hope he never reads this, I'm not trying to be terribly mean here)
"It is a matter of settled funds
that is - complicating this -
asking options house directly
if you have any misunderstanding
about the limit is - advised ."

and

"i have a watch on all of these stocks
and have no problem sending
a - heads up on any - high - rises
or dangers based on - bad deals -
is usually the problem - . I have
had my fair share - ."

let me terribly confused. So I didn't respond or do business with him. I would like to say I do not judge a person based on their grammar, but I guess in certain situations I do.

i dropped that fight a loooong time ago so idk why youre so obsessed with me. this is like the third time ive seen you hint or mention me.

but tbh typing with grammar feels weird. i like to type casual, though i can type with grammar when i need to (essays or crap idk)

I wasn't talking about you, I just mentioned your name as an example. Also, me mentioning your name had nothing to do with this...

youre disgusting OH MY GOD??! youre a huge transphobe. please shut up. seriously shut up. no one wants your transphobic opinion. being trans isnt a birth defect!!' what the hell???

stop enforcing gender roles on children. please stop. this girls club is terrible.

boys are laughed at for playing with girl toys. but if girls play with toys meant for boys its okay?? because being feminine is shameful right? smh. these toys that are about shopping and motherhood sends a message to girls that basically says "this is what girls are meant to do"

like look at the lego toys.
legos for boys: action! batman! building cities! saving the day!

legos for girls: shopping. going to the salon.

if its illegible. i rarely capitalize so i understand being lazy with typing, but... if it looks like i'm reading something typed by a 3rd grader then yes i will judge you.

I don't really care, I do both.
Sometimes I feel like trying and then sometimes i rlly couldnt giva crap bout it.

I'm so amused by the kids here using "nerd" as some kind of pejorative. Did that not end during my own childhood 30 years ago, when everyone realized that the highly intelligent, articulate people they were teasing would eventually be running companies?

I suppose my children are nerds, like their parents before them. Thank goodness!

they were joking. i am pretty sure no one seriously uses nerd as a pejorative.

For another poster above--please don't confuse people who value correct grammar with the racists who love to complain about dialects and ESL speakers. I have found that the people who are the most vocal in that respect often don't actually understand proper grammar themselves. I've had students submit argumentative essays arguing that immigrants all need to speak English, and they write...in very poor English. Life's little ironies.

Why don't we just not judge people on the internet in the first place? If you can still read it then why complain that they put "baby and me"? Because grammar is the ONLY thing that matters in a conversation?
Its rude to make unfair assumptions about someone. You don't know their life or really anything else about them.
Its just my personal opinion but i think people who call others dumb or stupid are really the 'stupid' ones. If you're going to make unfair assumptions about someone you don't know then I'm going to assume you're an ass. ( ^ω^ ) i don't care if they've the lowest grades in class or they have a disease that keeps them from learning as fast as others. Why can't you give someone the benefit of doubt? Why can't realize there's more to someone then the way they type?

Ah. Thanks for the clarification! I have to say, the humor of those posts was lost on me entirely. Maybe I need to adjust my irony meter, since I'm actually the one outside her correct demographic here.

Wow, this thread got frighteningly hostile a couple pages back. It's weird, you'd think people with such a deliberate aversion to literacy wouldn't be interested in a text-heavy game like Animal Crossing.

it's a pretty common joke around the internet, just in case you run into that again and can't gauge someone's tone. c: oh, and that user uses they/them pronouns rather than she/her.

I absolutely agree that there are many reasons people may struggle with language, and I appreciate what you are saying about acceptance. However, I see a lot of people argue--not just here, but many other venues as well--that grammar shouldn't matter, that the teachers who try to convey the power of correct language are boring or stupid, and that caring about such knowledge indicates numerous character flaws (uncool, not chill, uptight, etc.). To me, that's the flip side of the same rude coin. I teach writing to young adults who are heading towards applications to professional schools, resumes, cover letters, and executive summaries. I love language and I want it to contribute to their success. So I just want to offer that perspective on behalf of the language teachers of the world. :)

Oh, I wasn't clear there--sorry! I meant myself by "her." I'm outside my own usual demographic...seeing as how I'm middle-aged and obsessed with this kids' game...

BLAEHHH
sorry i'm in one of these 'moods' about english right now because I have a english teacher who's been really mean to me because my sister was in his class and she used to get in fights with him. The other day i was like
"Oh, I was absent yesterday and i don't really understand this part of the worksheet, can you explain this?"
*shrugs* "i'll do it later. Just wait until I get done grading this. And don't talk to your shoulder partner or im going to rip your paper like I did last time."
*class ends*
"Hey, mr. D, I'm still confused and you never explained it to me."
*shrugs* "i don't know then. I'm not going to stay after school so yeah. Also we have a test on this tomorrow."
(?_?) youuuuuuuuuuu
I didn't mean to be rude, sorry. I don't hate grammar and everything about it, it just erks me when I forget to capitalize a letter in an internet conversation and people are like
"IT'S YOU'RE YOU DUMB A$$!! LOL"
I just...people.
