I read that you need a Nintendo Online account to do this and for that you have to pay for a subscription. Is this true, and if so is that the only way of scanning QR codes in?

Hi, I think this is the only way. You get the Switch Online subscription and download the Switch Online app to your smartphone (IRL) which lets you use that camera to scan them into the game.

I'm using the Switch Online family membership with 7 friends. It's just less than the cost of 2 x individual Switch Online memberships but can be divided amongst 8 people. On the Australian eShop, 1 year works out as AUD$7 each which is about 2 coffees. :)
