Do You Have to be Online to Scan Amiibo?

Just wondering if you need to be connected to the Internet to scan in Amiibo figures for the new villagers. I live out in the sticks and don't have internet at home. I already downloaded the update on wifi, but was wondering if i need to find wifi to scan in my Wolf Link.

I don't think you have to, but I'm not completely sure.

I scanned perfectly fine without wifi.

Definitely not! But I think there will be WiFi again in the game; you can ask Harvey about WiFi in the campground and he checked the connection but said there was nothing there -- I'm thinking we will be able to get special visitors through him eventually? (Hoping for the rest of the lost villagers!)
