Do you have any design quirks?

I've noticed for myself that I prefer to have buildings up against the back of a cliff. I don't like walking behind facilities and having the view of my character cut off. I have this to such a degree that I specifically terraformed places in my town where I could pretty much nestle all of the buildings up against a cliff. I think only two villagers houses are not.

That's actually a clever idea! I have so much going on in the front of my island -- it probably would've been smarter to place buildings against cliffs. Oh well!

I use my custom patterns less for actual aesthetic paths and more for putting art of my favorite characters and memes all around town
I go for what sparks joy lol

I've done this to a few buildings, but for a different reason. I did this because it uses the available space a lot better. Some houses had to be placed like this because it was the most logical way to build a house in those specific areas (looking from the animals' perspectives, as in my case, the idea is that the animals themselves built their own houses).

Everything I do has to be in a fenced in! Doesn't matter if its supposed to be a rural area, its gettin a fence around it

I never plant 2 trees less than 2 spaces apart, unless it’s diagonally. Been doing this since WW.

whenever i think a space is too empty i’ll throw in a waterfall lol it’s a really bad habit

I'm the same way about not wanting anyone including me behind buildings lol.
I was very frustrated when I found out I can't terraform those cliff edges! I keep finding my villagers hidden there so I might put items blocking them from walking behind cliffs

Yes, this exactly. My houses are in three different neighborhoods. Four houses on the edge of the cliff overlooking the sea, three backed by cliffs, and three with a row of trees and a path behind them.

I still don't know what to do with my house or a second chars I want to create for storage.

I have a bunch of little rules like that that I like to set for myself to keep things consistent, so that I am happy with the results.

Come to think of it, I ended up not saying what my "design rules" are (at least for this island, specifically.

Everything has to look as natural as possible and fit within the theme. That means I have planted plenty of weeds and flowers in a seemingly random fashion, just to make sure it would look and feel organic. Some few areas of the island break this rule because they're supposed to look man-made, but other than that, it has to feel natural.

I did that for inclines. Other than that, I hate furnitures or buildings directly near a river. I make sure my rivers is accessible because I hate the idea of fishing and I can’t reach the fish if a building fence or furniture is there. Not useful to me since I barely fish but I still have the urge to do it :/

I hate thin paths (one to two spaces wide) so all of my main paths are at least three. There's two one space path (both trails between trees) and a couple two space paths (to connect large paths and prevent having to run ten miles before being able to turn around to the bottom)

I prefer to not have my villager's houses in rows with picket fences. I need my island to look like a mountain town and somewhat rural while still looking populated/not deserted. It's just a preference of mine; I've seen some amazing urban-esque islands though

I'm conflicted because I love Jacob's Ladder/Lily of the Valley, but I also love the wild look of the weeds in this game 😭

I always line all of my paths with flowers. I started doing this in New Leaf when flowers couldn't wilt (with the beautiful town ordinance) and it's carried over into New Horizons. I hate just having paths, they have to be lined with flowers of alternating colors (and sometimes even trees).
