Do you have any design quirks?

I always prefer having rivers or cliffs behind buildings, mostly because I hate it when something like fossils spawn behind there and I’m unable to see it.
I personally am not that fond of a super urban area, I like my towns or island to look like a small town that is surrounded by nature. Because of this I have a ton of trees and usually a ton more flowers in my towns or island. Like, to the point my island or town is literally covered in flowers.

All my villagers have to have a garden, and it has to be roughly the same size. Houses also have to be lined up perfectly with any others near them.

I always line all of my paths with flowers. I started doing this in New Leaf when flowers couldn't wilt (with the beautiful town ordinance) and it's carried over into New Horizons. I hate just having paths, they have to be lined with flowers of alternating colors (and sometimes even trees).
I suggest you to experiment something different than flowers: garden lanterns. You'll be surprised by how beautiful that looks.

I've gotta have villagers randomly placed and not like a neighborhood. I just have never liked how it looks. I'm gonna try it this time around though since it's a lot easier to fix.

i like everything looking organic! no sharp angles while terraforming, and i don't really like anything to look too uniform for that reason! i have a few more developed areas for my island where it's meant to look more manicured, but largely i want it to feel pretty natural. i have a few gardens scattered around for hybrids, but even for that i tried to have breaks in the fences so it all feels a little worn. (and i love using dirt paths for patches of soil. especially for flower beds or in my campgrounds) i also like having my villagers scattered rather than in a grid!

i also really don't like the waterfalls from nowhere (like i saw someone else say here), even though i've seen my friends made them really look nice! i just feel like they have to come from a source, so i always try to join mine to my rivers. (and i like to make my rivers have thinner little streams that run off and then rejoin the main river, too.)

I like having all of my villagers' houses spread out all over my island! While I like a lot of the neighborhoods with them all close together I've seen, I prefer having my whole island inhabited :)

I try to make my layout and bridges symmetrical as well as some of the area and my paths are always 2 tiles in width.

Do you mean like lining paths with the lanterns (along with flowers possibly)? Do you have any photo examples of this? I'd like to check it out :)

I don't line them along with flowers. I use them lining along the path, with one or two tiles of space between them. I'll take a screenshot in a minute for you.

@xSuperMario64x well, it took more than just a minute but it's here. I took a screenshot of one area (which will be changed soon) and made a short video showing another one.

Once you described it up there I think I understood what you were going at. I could potentially try something like that, though idk if I would actually line my path w them. Maybe just put them at the corners of intersections n such. I really like the way that my paths look when they're lined with flowers :P

I have my flowers mostly scattered around trees and weeds, as if they were just there naturally instead of being used as a decoration. Obviously, I do have one garden and some villagers have yards where they may have a few flowers, but personally, if I would line my paths with something more natural, I would use bushes (probably hibiscus).

I love patterns and would use insane amounts if there weren't a limit. I don't care so much about the clothes/path ones, my favorites are the misc, really random ones like dino footprints, mossy path overlays, soot sprites that hold stuff. I want to litter my town with cute little objects and stuff, which is why the pattern limit is killing me : (((

I avoid horizontal rivers. All mine are vertical.
I hate planting trees in vertical rows because then I cant see them as well.
I keep forgetting I can put bushes next to stuff not just one tile away.
I also do not enjoy things being in front of my character.
I try to put things behind trees so fossils dont vanish behind them never to be found.
Using hedges to line cliffs but then barbed wire to line to hedge...

Same as a couple others, I prefer a more natural look when terraforming. If I make a waterfall, I'll also dig a pond above it so it's not coming out of the side of a cliff. I also don't like cliff edges that are too straight and clean - I waste a lot more space this way, but I'll make cliffs more jagged with rounded out edges in the corners so they look more natural.

I'm conflicted because I love Jacob's Ladder/Lily of the Valley, but I also love the wild look of the weeds in this game 😭

Wait. Do weeds stop you from getting a 5 Star Rating? The fact that you can choose to plant them made me think they wouldn’t count against your points...

After looking at guides to get a 5-star evaluation: in order to grow Jacob's Ladders, your island needs to get a 5-star rating, and in order to get a 5-star rating, your island can't have any weeds on it.
