The villagers that I like happen to go with my island's fantasy theme. All of the permanent villagers will be based on mythical creatures or fantasy story references.

I'm basing my whole island around their sub-personalities.

For example, I'm making gardens for those who like nature, music halls for those who like music, playgrounds for those who like play... etc.

For the exterior of their houses, I have an area based on their interior design (i.e. Poppy's is like fall, Drago's is Asian culture) and I have their favorite song playing outside of their house.

I got into the habit of making themes for my towns in New Leaf, and that carried over to New Horizons. I originally didn't have one in mind and was just going to go with a generic island theme with island appropriate villagers, but I ended up deciding on a historical theme. The only one who doesn't really fit the theme on their own is Diva, but she was the best option for a Sisterly. She's a holdover from the original island idea.

So, I voted for the second option on the poll.

i don’t - i choose whichever villager makes me happy regardless of their design or the theme of my island ;;

For now, I don't. I'm slightly thinking about overhauling my whole island and just make it a forest with squirrels. I like my neighbourhood area though, so I will just cycle my villagers for now.

I started with a planned roster of 10 rabbits, and deviated a bit for some dreamies (Kabuki at this point is integral ;~; I love him) and some happy accidents from Nook (Sherb, Sprinkle, and Merengue from the first few Mystery Islands at the start of the game, Friga from the plot being sold, Stella as a guest because I felt bad for not taking her from a Mystery Islamnd, etc.).

At this point, my theme is not the majority of my villagers, but I am working towards it, with my intent being not to get rid of Kabuki and Sprinkle. Friga and Sherb might stay too. Marshal is a placeholder at the moment, mainly for Toby (the Sanrio Smug rabbit), because I'm worried that if I had O'Hare and they brought Toby back, I wouldn't be able to bring myself to get rid of O'Hare lol. I'm probably going to let Merengue go eventually. Coco is going to replace Stella sometime after I get her photo, and I'm looking at trying to find a place for Ruby. Idk if I can handle 3 Peppy villagers tho.

This is the first game I ever tried something like this. Amiibo makes it easy, and I didn't play ACNL much after Welcome Amiibo. Before, I liked going with the flow and seeing who I got, although waiting for the ones I didn't like to leave could be rough. I kind of like a balance of dreamies and randoms, I think.

I thought about leaning into a food villager theme with Bunnie (she's based on apple slices), Sherb, Sprinkle, and Merengue once I got them, because I also love Tangy, Ketchup, Mint, Tia, and Zucker. >> Rounding out the personalities was hard for me though (personally), whereas bunnies are my favourite animal.

I mean, the theme is I like them and my taste is very specific. 😂 It's like, likely to be used in an anime type of villagers. And they're all cuties.

I think that all of my (planned) villagers are either very elegant/ sophisticated looking, give off a slightly dark/ gothic vibe or both. Originally I had planned to get villagers that look like toys or animatronics, but that was before I knew much about the game and thought that there would be plenty to fit that bill.

I kinda sorta have themes? Idk, my island is going to have different themed sections and their houses roughly match the areas they're going to be in (wooden houses in the fishing village, dark house in the forest and so on), but the villagers themselves I picked based on whether I like them. It just happens to work out.

That said, Raymond I want because of his office theme that goes with one of my characters, and Sterling I did choose specifically because I like the idea of my town having a town guard, but there aren't many jocks I like.

Although I like to think that my villagers all have big ol cute eyes, I don't think they really have a theme. I just like who I like.

I'd love to theme them, I thought about going for a history theme as there are surprisingly quite a few, (I still might do it if I can convince myself to get rid of Hans and Cube) I also really wanted to do a "monster" theme with Boris and Spike but I couldn't find enough that fit the look I was going for.

Tldr: my villagers are just whatever I like even though I have ideas for themes

I'm checking a villager's house exterior before inviting them, so yeah, I'm sort of following a theme. There are rural and more developed parts in my town and I'm trying to match the exterior designs to either residential district. Also, bright colours are a no-go for me (in villager and house exterior design).

Luckily, most of my dreamies fit my theme.

Well, all of my villagers will be villagers I really want, but if I'm having a hard time deciding b/t some, I think about the way their house would fit into certain areas of my island. I try to keep their house following a certain color theme!

None in particular. I never really paid attention as to who I've been allowing to live on my island since I just tend to choose the ones I like out of my own personal preference. Having said that, I never even thought of maybe doing this approach! :)

i am honestly so friggin picky, it's a wonder i ever chose anyone, lol. my villager choices depend on a lot of things - species, personality, vibe, actual character colors and attributes, og clothing, og interior, exterior, some concrete element of realness or plausibility, popularity, uniqueness as compared to my other villagers, etc. and yes, haha, these traits all do have to adhere to a set theme for my island. so for NH i have been looking for bright colored, poppy and unique characters with some take on modern tech meets plantcore/green design theme, to match my overall island theme. it's highly specific so it's been a bit of a challenge, which i love tbh!!

a good example of this is: drift! a rather unpopular (why tho!!!) jock frog that is much cuter than most other jocks, bc he's super small and designed after a poison dartfrog, with creative patterns and a happy face. his house has great wooded elements on the exterior, and the interior is take on a rokker theme without being overwhelming. it has a tool shelf, ironwood furniture, succulents, a fern, throwback skull and a dj table. he also talks less about constant exercise than other jocks i've seen? for sure its one of his hobbies, but i also see him just wandering around, exploring stuff. all these elements together made him a primo pick!

i do all my villager research upfront and dither for a long while before i go out and trade for them and even then sometimes i decide to let them go, if i'm just not vibing or i have too many villagers that feel too similar, lol.
