That depends on whether I had any personal attachment to the villager who left.
Most of the time they've just left terrible outfits that I've gifted them, but the first time someone did that I was more annoyed than anything. It was Agnes who threw away the heart apron that she was wearing before she left.
If I liked the villager a lot, yes! Recently, Lily left and all she left me was a wooden wardrobe; I was sad at the reminder that I let her go (would summon her with a card again if I didn’t want three other villagers more) and also sad she didn’t have anything good to leave me lol... (I feel bad for feeling this way). Tex wasn’t a favorite but I did grow attached to him. I was excited to see a frozen treat set in the box but was sad to see one of the outfits that I gifted him in it as well. ><
I also think that the piece of furniture that your villager leaves behind when they move out is a piece of furniture that was originally in your house/or gifted to them. When whitney moved out I think she left behind a ring that used to be displayed inside of her house and when Ankha moved out, she left behind a pyramid xD
First time I really noticed this is when I was trying to move somebody out to adopt another villager from someone - it ended up being Rolf who I kind of liked (but I hated his house so he got the boot), after he left I found the parka undercoat I gave him in the recycling and legit was kind of sad It was like he knew I was kicking him out so I could have someone else LOL
It's the only form of "mean villagers" in this game. Them leaving behind something you gift them. Rather then feel hurt by something like that, it amuses me.
As a mechanic, it's cool as it helps in getting some valuable items. Surely helped fill in some of my catalog, having different kinds of villagers move out.
It’s sad that they leave behind one of the items you gave them ): but I’d like to think they’re returning one of their favorite items to you so you can remember them instead of leaving it behind in spite
I think it's funny when they leave behind a shirt they didn't like. It's like you get to see how they truly feel about it, lol. Like when you get a gift from someone, and it's not really your thing, but you have to be polite and act like you love it? Yeah, the villagers do that. But I could see how that could kinda hurt a little when you put a ton of thought into gifting them that shirt.
But then they also leave behind one of their furniture items, and I've gotten really good souvenirs from them generally. Spike left me his shower stall, and most recently Monty left me his mush log. My first-ever move-out, Naomi, left me an antique clock. I still have and display all of them. They're part of my island history.
I discovered this a couple of months back when Julian finally moved out. It was pretty heartbreaking to see, until I realised I didn't need star fragments to craft the garland anymore! I would much prefer a letter it felt like seeing your long passed dogs collar in a box (I know this is dramatic) It's the only time I feel guilty for moving villagers out! I never look in the box anymore for that reason lol
