Do you buy dreamies?

I see what your saying!

For example Bam only became a dreamie because he was there from the start and ive learned to love him as opposed to say Diana whom i got from a trade who I feel less of a connection to.

But then on the other hand you have kitt, kidd, and beau whom i received from giveaways who I do really love and am glad I have in my town.

I think the issue for me is the popularity? Someone on tumblr thought i was weird for offering molly for kitt? And i guess when i did get Diana I was thinking on the line of popularity which made me want her even more, even though when I got her it wasnt as nce as I thought it would be.

I guess it depends. The stronger "bonds" I get are from the ones who moved into naturally, but I also find joy in adopting villaers who would have been voided (see kitt and Kidd)

Does that make sense at all?

Yeah, you get my point. I dig natural over buying. However, I see allot of people on the forum feel a connection towards giveaways rather than buying. I guess I put a price on love for the villagers I bought as opposed to the villagers who were adopted freely or naturally moved in.

I think buying villagers is fine, though i'd probably never do it myself. I don't have lots of bells saved up, and frankly, I'm too lazy to even bother. I'm patient enough to wait it out and reset for my preferred villager whenever I get a new move in. and I'm not really picky with plot placement either so it's not a big deal. also, I like that my villagers have never lived in another town besides mine (it's dumb but whatever).

I actually don't mind them talking about their old towns ^.^ I moved around a lot as a child. It's not weird to me that they came from somewhere else xD

I also like having my favorite villagers, so I don't mind paying for them. I do agree though, my two favorite villagers (other than Tammy who moved in on her own) are Erik and Marshal, who I won in giveaways xD

I have no problems with buying or selling villagers. I have bought, sold, given away and gotten villagers for free. Its all good. When I do buy, I think of it as a finder's fee. You are paying someone for the convienience of having a villager right now instead of waiting and stalking a cycling thread for weeks or getting lucky with a giveaway thread. In real life, I have had recruiters recruit me away from one company to another, and they got paid well for that service. I didn't really feel like an object, lol, its a win win for everyone involved.

Just one thing, these villagers are not slaves! :). There are real slaves in the world, and their suffering is real. We all love the game, thats why we are here on this forum, but at the end of the day, its a game and these are computer programs/pixels.

I refuse to pay for or sell villagers on principle

but I'm not gonna be stopping anyone else from doing so either

When I first heard about buying/selling villagers the idea bothered me, but I have sold a couple villagers out of my cycle town so I could afford my own dream villagers. Since I'm satisfied with my town's villagers now, I'll no longer be selling anyone.

I'm currently using my cycling town to hold onto a friend's villagers since she recently reset her town, but once she has them all moved back into her town I'll probably open a cycling thread and free cycle and only charge for reserves.

I should probably add that I don't really have issues forming attachments with my villagers, regardless of how I obtained them.

I love this game and I love my villagers, friends, and accomplishments. But it is still a game. If we took the "wrong" mentality to every game that exists nobody would play anything.

It's a game and the villagers, as much as we may love or dislike them, are still pixels.

No, it's not wrong. I don't classify things done in games that are designed to allow you to get the villagers you want as wrong.

I think I can understand the mentality of it, but I certainly don't share it.

I didn't mean to target anyone individually. I just was having second thoughts about the business. I'm no hypocrite, five of my villagers were bought.
I have sold Lolly to someone who was dying to have her and I felt happy that she could be in a home where someone would treat her better than I did. I just wondered if people resisted the urge to splurge on a villager they really wanted, that's all.

I don't think it's wrong but it feels weird getting any villagers from someone else only because I don't really want them talking about their old town (I get jealous?????) but I still do it because there's really no way I can get all my desired villagers on my own.

Buying them or getting them for free, whatever the case, it's all the same.

As for the slavery stuff, uhm ????

tbf the only thing the game has a direct option for is obtaining villagers from other people, it's the community that mixed monetary value into that

While i dont have issues getting attached to bought villagers (i am, in fact very attached to them, no matter how i got them), i have to tell you, you are not alone. I have been on this forum and others for close to a year now, and every once in a while, people post things along this line, i.e., they just dont feel as close to villagers they have bought, or they adopted or they feel closer to ones that just happen to move into town instead of through adoption. So, no, dont feel weird and know that you are not alone. Happens really often!

For me, its stangely enough, time traveling. When i use to tt heavily in city folk to accomplish things, like grass renewal or something like that, i did feel very detached from my town. Like it wasnt my town. When i went slow, i felt invested in my town again. Maybe getting something too easily or readily is leading you to feel detached from your villagers. I dont know, i am just theorizing. :)

You probably just summed it up in words for me. I guess I don't like the easy way out. I play a lot of games and those games usually have me working hard to accomplish something I want. I guess since New Leaf is one of the first "Wait it out" games I've played, it's difficult for my inner sense to make thought that no matter how hard I build a perfect town, dreamies are random and my hard work won't lead to them moving in any faster.

I believe that everyone has a different way of playing new leaf when it comes to having the villagers a person has, although i don't think that there should be a specific way to get the villagers a person wants — for example, when it comes to pokemon, some people like playing while EV training their pokemon while others just enjoy raising their pokemon without putting much emphasis on raising certain stats.

personally, from my own experience, the large majority of my villagers are villagers who have randomly moved into my town at some point or another, or that i found in my campsite. and as time passed i slowly got more attached to them! /// although out of my nine villagers that moved in on their own or from campsites, tia was given to me for free by a friend on tumblr and i bought fauna here on these forums! it doesn't really bother me whenever they talk about their own towns, but i still very much love them regardless and slowly i feel as though i continue to grow closer them by each passing day! if anything, it sort of gives them a background history of their own?

i suppose in conclusion, it's just a personal preference that each person of their own has!

I used to feel weird about buying villagers too until I realized they aren't real and don't care if they've been "bought". Now when I pay for villagers I think of it more as a tip for the person being kind enough to let me invite the villager into my town. Especially if they took the time to TT the villager out for me.

I still give all my villagers away for free though, just because I like to. I like having to earn my bells, selling villagers for millions just seems too easy.

Regarding feeling more "attached" to villagers that originated in your town/campsite, well that's up to personal preference. I think it's adorable when villagers mention their old towns. As someone else said, it makes them feel more "real", like they had an actual life before I met them. (I think it's funny when villagers like Roscoe and Hazel, who originated in my town, talk about doing things "back home" -- I'm like, wait, where did you come from again??)

I do feel a little weird sometimes about getting villagers from cycle towns though. I cringe a little whenever Kyle mentions his old mayor "sjp" from "mfs" or whatever, because it reminds me that he came from a cycle town where the owner couldn't be bothered to give the mayor/town proper names. But it doesn't bother me to the point where I can't feel connected to him, or the other few villagers I obtained from cycle towns. I just tell myself that I rescued them from towns where they otherwise would've never gotten the love or attention they deserve. :p

i personally do buy & sell villagers, mainly because i have no patience for my dream villagers to come around. But i thinks ok to do so, since.. its better than just voiding the villagers once they ask to leave.. Its better to give/sell them off to someone who actually wants them other than basically throwing them out aha
but yeah, i don't really care what anyone/i do in this game, cause we paid for it, and we deserve to do anything we want and its just coding+pixel+animation

/shrugs

omg same. I forgot it does kinda bug me when Pietro mentions that he came from "Cycle" why couldn't they have just given the town a real name aaa
I like your way of looking at it though. haha

ahh i really like your view on it! :) i completely agree

It's not wrong, it's just.. (to me) weird.
Pay a million (or more) bells for a villager when they can show up in a cycling town and you can get them for free?
C'mon now..
