I think villager's new secondary personality trait/hobby is a very interesting mechanic. I know it makes villagers more likely to participate in certain events, but does it also make them more likely not to participate in other events?

For example, I have two snooties, Judy and Ankha. Judy's official hobby is singing, but she also works out very often (yoga + weights). Ankha's hobby is nature, but I have never seen her work out. Ever. I think this is especially strange to me because the rest of my villagers are huge "gym rats" (lol) and they are constantly working out, even if they don't have the "fitness" hobby!!

What hobbies do your villagers participate in and what hobbies don't they participate in?

Merengue has the "nature" hobby, but girl is always in a tracksuit doing yoga and lifting weights on the plaza! She loves to work out! Raymond is also the nature hobby but isn't caught dead working out at any point. I always thought that was funny.

I'm not sure if hobbies are a thing in this game! I wish there were more differences between villagers of the same personality to distinguish them

Actually they are! You can find more in depth sources to this, but here is a basic animal crossing wiki page about it:

I've wondered this as well. It's interesting to me how some hobbies can *only* be done by villagers with the hobby, while other hobbies can be done by all villagers. For example, I think villagers with the education hobby are the only villagers who can read outside (other villagers can read inside). Someone can correct me if I'm wrong on that. I know the nature hobby can study flowers with a book, but that's slightly different. On the other hand, it seems every villager can work out (fitness). Every villager can sing (music), though it seems only the music hobby can sing when they are not by a music player.

I had Beau (nature) for two months and never saw him sing or work out, but I've seen him do both in other people's videos.

I've had Buzz (nature) for 3 months now and I don't think I've ever seen him work out.

I often find Raymond (nature) studying plants, but he does occasionally work out. It seems like Bluebear (fashion) works out quite a bit.

I've seen villagers without the music hobby sing in the plaza with no music! However you are right in that they don't sing or "dance" around town without music. But just the other night I caught Huck (smug frog with fitness hobby) singing in the plaza when there was no music playing nearby!

Upon thinking more about this subject, I came up with this short list:
  • I've never seen Ankha work out
  • I've never seen Judy play
  • I've never seen Sylvana sing (with or without music)
  • I've never seen Snake water plants
These are common hobbies that almost all my villagers participate in often, and its been strange not seeing the above do the same.

Villagers watering flowers is effectively the same as you watering your flowers or having the rain do it. It sets the hydration flag, which gives it a chance to breed/clone the following the day. If a villager waters a flower, you don't have to water it.

Ha! Unfortunately, that picture is from NL. I'm not sure if you played NL, but the "gifts" from Balloons in that game were... erm... let's just say, not well-received.

You thought the Bunny Day Balloons were bad? The Balloon Balloons were the original source of dread. =P

... I honestly don't remember how long it took me to set up that picture. I'm not sure if that was a chance encounter that I took advantage of, or if I just sat there at that location waiting for a Balloon just for the photo-op, haha.

... Incredible. There's someone out there who actually likes the Balloon set? And could put it to good use? I can't understate how much everyone hated the set when NL was released, haha.

Well... I think this is the one furniture set, out of all the furniture sets that aren't in NH, that basically no one wanted back. But if you feel so strongly about it, then I'll hope for its return someday. :'D

From what I read it seems like the fitness hobby working out, or the ‘special’ behavior is when they are wearing the ‘sporty shades’. while all my villagers exercise in some way, only Genji uses the serious looking dumbell (the other villagers have little blue ones) and wears sporty shades while he lifts weights. Supposedly Audie, who also has the fitness hobby also wears the sporty shades when working out as part of her hobby.

Honestly, I could do with less working out from all my villagers...so if there are villagers with an anti-fitness hobby please send them my way 😋

If only I liked the lazy and cranky personalities more. I rarely if ever see them work out (on my island at least).

Yes, I think the special behavior for all hobbies are the following:
  • Music - dancing with no music, singing with no music (outside of the plaza)
  • Nature - reading about plants/bugs/fish standing up
  • Fitness - wearing the special shades + large barbell
  • Education - sitting and reading a book outside with glasses
  • Play - ?
  • Fashion - ?
However, everyone has the possibility of doing the follow:
  • Music - sing in the plaza, or around town by a mic or music player
  • Nature - follow bugs around, water flowers
  • Fitness - work out with the small blue weight in a track suit jacket, or do yoga
  • Education - ?
  • Play - play "airplanes" with others or alone, play "airplanes" with others while holding sticks, host treasure hunts
  • Fashion - ?
As you can see I'm really not sure what the fashion hobby means 😅 Other than that, this is what I've observed from my villagers so far in the game!

Wolfgang never works out. He reads all the time, in different spots, all over the island. Coco reads. To a lesser extent than Wolfgang. Rolf and Mathilda work out often. I've never seen Dom sing, read (outside) or do yoga. Tangy does a lot of yoga. Raymond waters the flowers obsessively. He's always consulting his nature book. Claude never works out. Neither does Zucker, although he did it once at the plaza with two other residents. I don't think I've seen Fuchsia fish or chase bugs outside of the tournaments.

That’s funny to me that you’ve never seen snake water flowers. I was trying to get rid of a bunch of them the other day and he was going behind me watering them. I could almost swear he was doing it to purposely make me mad.

That pretty much fits with their hobbies.

see this list for what hobby each villager has. Rare for a jock, Dom’s is actually play.

The yoga’s not part of a hobby as far as I can tell, except that the one character I have with the fitness hobby never does yoga

Wow that is pretty interesting! I'll have to watch Snake more often to see if he waters my flowers when he thinks I'm not looking or something lol
