Do catchphrases spread amongst villagers? Are some villagers more popular?

So I give really stupid/corny/weird catchphrases to my villagers every time they "ping" me because I get frustrated while trying to get them to suggest Public Works. So I gave Monty "yoloswag" as his catchphrase and now pretty much every friggin villager in my town is saying yoloswag... Papi, Derwin, etc.

Is Monty like super popular with everyone else or something? This is quite hilarious xD

Haha yeah they do spread, he might have given it to someone else and they gave it to someone and the cycle continued lol

Yes, the villagers spread their catchphrases and greetings. It`really annoying when you want them to keep a certain catchphrase that fits them.

Sometimes it can be hilarious when they do it though! In my original town I had Frank saying I eat kids. and a couple of my sweeter villagers picked it up, so I had Bunnie and Skye saying it which was adorably out of place.
In my current town I got Wolfgang as one of my first few move ins and then I took Clay to hold for a friend, well Wolfgang passed off his original snarrl catchphrase onto Clay, Wolfgang has been gone for a while but Clay is still saying Snarrl which cracks me up every time because he's so derpy and cute otherwise.

It's also even more common to spread to others if they live close to each other. I used to make Tia say sweets and then Elvis, Ken, and Blaire started saying sweets which was cute but it totally didn't fit some of them lol. That's why I stopped giving them individual ones and just made them all say derp at one point and then a new villager from another town would have a different catchphrase and the pattern would repeat so it's inevitable that catchphrases would "catch" on (lame I know lol :P)

Just recently, I realized that Ed had been using Fang's "cha-chomp" catchphrase and had completely forgotten that his original one was "greenhorn" because he hasn't used it in a while. To be fair, though, I tend to ignore Ed. He's grown on me a bit, and part of that is because I didn't like his default outfit, but he changed into something I like better. :p

Zell has spreader his around quite a few times. When I was first starting out Tom moved out who I didn't really want to let go off so quickly and Rosie happened to pick up his catchphrase before he left then she spread it all around the town so almost everyone had Tom's catchphrase haha. She also commonly spread catchphrases I gave her before she accidentally packed up and left.
