In generally I'd assume trying any glitch at any point is risky. Glitches aren't supposed to happen, so you're pretty much ALWAYS at risk for some form of corruption or another.

I'm only mentioning because you just asked if it was risky to try it. If you didn't mind the risk in City Folk I don't really understand why you're worried about New Leaf.
I think the risk is the same as its always been. Those that do dupe say there is no risk at all.
You have to work out the new timings, and this board is probably not the one to ask about it.
My feelings on duping are that it is risky because you are turning the power off while the game is saving, normally this would corrupt the save data, it doesn't (or shouldn't) while you are connected to the wifi - hence players saying there is no risk. But risk is how an individual perceives it and I don't like it.
What does duping gain you - bells? Well I play the game and the bells just roll in, so I don't want bells any other way.
Items - well you can trade for them, orderables you need only to ask to catalog, and the unorderables, well you can get them, but realise they are like to be duped or other wise obtained.
