Designs that sacrifice practicality for beauty, thoughts?

I have a good number of areas with a 1-space walkthrough, such as alleys and my japanese marketplace, but with me having claustrophobia I made it in a way that still looks spacious (i.e. using fencing that doesn't look like a wall). Since I perch most walkways on cliffs, the open space around and above doesn't feel too tight :)

I also want to arrive at the point where I no longer need poles and ladders to get around!

I think the most "inaccessible" I've done so far is putting two of my rocks in the middle of a lake. I kind of need stone mateirals rn so I'm probably dismantling the lake until my final revision of the island.

It's kinda like a fish tank.. gotta make sure your fishies dont get caught and everyone can move about freely!!! I do want my island to be functional for the most part but I do also enjoy using dropped items sometimes.. I definetely have some spots where I get stuck but my island is nowhere near done.. it's nice to have the option to keep villagers out of a certain area lol

I don't like the idea of getting stuck and the diagonal side steps, so my island is a practical as possible. I only have one place where you can side step but it's on an island in a pond and no required jumping areas. I used to have jumping areas that lead to my house, but I got frustrated by it after a while.

i'm all for practicality. if i have something out i intend for it to be accessible, in terms of items. for that reason i don't like having chairs pressed right up against tables if it can't be accessed from the side. i like things that look good and i value aesthetic a lot but it bothers me if things are inaccessible

My friend makes fun of me daily for this, but I have my house perched up on the second level, with a flight of stairs leading up to it and walls/fencing on either side. This means that any visitors are forced to enter and exit through the adjacent town center if they want to get through to the other side of my island.

It sounds dumb, but I swear it looks cool! It's like my fenced-in private property, with its own private yard. Private properties are supposed to be hard to navigate.

My island will be a happy medium. Although I love the look of super terraformed towns, I need to be able to get around easily. Hopefully I can still manage to make practical look good.

I hate having to jump a lot so having a bunch of jumping step stones or having to jump to another part of my island would stress me out. I also like seeing my villagers walk everywhere on my island.

Oh yeah the whole chairs thing next to somthing that u cant use making it so u cant sit in it is so pointless to me I just would never do that

But yeah I just made a space just like this I left areas so I could atleast go through but its definetely a beautiful mess!

I definitely would like my island to be more practical and easier to move around, while looking the way I want it to. I’m having difficulties with the one area I’m working on since all of the items take up more space than they should like the palm tree lamps. Then there’s the fact that if I arrange my items differently, it would no longer be depicting what I want it to and probably wouldn’t look as good. Then there are the tiki torches that I’m using with the market place decorations. It looks like there’d be enough room to walk by them both, but they take up more space.

Really depends on the owner of the island and the purpose of the island, because if the island exists purely to look good and is not made to be played on, then I think it's ok!! Everyone has different ways of playing the game and if it's something you want, then go ahead. But if the island is going to be played on normally then I think over time impractical places may become super exhausting 😢
On the other hand tho, some of them look fun, like obstacle courses or elaborate waterfalls!

i went on a tour recently of a popular-ish japanese player's island (@chin_retro) with the "showa retro" theme and HEAVY decorations everywhere like.....extremely impractical and really choppy framerate, it would be a hassle to play 'normally' on (like with no TT, laid back, doing all dailies every day) but god it looks SO COOL and it was incredibly fun to explore all the little areas she made on there! it's a totally different way of playing the game but also...it makes sense that if you like to create custom designs and are a fan of that overcrowded aesthetic then you'd want to cover your island in it, i guess? attaching my pics of the tour so that forum users who haven't heard of this kind of island can see what i mean. i think it looks awesome

That island is so cool!! I appreciate cluttered city like island. 😱💕

I think I do ths? I have three things you just can't get to unless you dig up a bush or climb up. Also, I have trees that are formed with a close circle base, so if say a fossil spawns on one of the areas you cannot dig it up. I cover those spots with flowers or weeds. Also, a lot of ponds/rivers are too small for fish to spawn.

I prioritize functionality even though i absolutely love "cluttered" islands. I had the same mindset when designing my nl village. However, in nh my island entrance is a little inconvenient because you have to do two jumps but i like the look of it, so my poor brother who is the only one i can trade with currently has to suffer. I might need to change it if i start doing online trades, dont want people regretting coming over lol.
