This game definitely forces you to be social if you want to get a lot of cool things.

oh my god you just described my feelings about games in a nutshell. I feel so completely GET OFF MY LAWN WHIPPERSNAPPERS about sooooo many things these days (YOUTHS!! *shakes fist at sky*) but I also just.... deal with it :| because I love visiting islands and whatnot so I'm also like. DEF part of the problem here. ALAS.
I feel the exact same way, and I'm only a 90s baby haha. There are several reasons I don't have online and one of them is actually that I don't want to feel like I'm part of the problem and encouraging their dumb online-locking. I know it won't do anything but, I don't know it at least makes me feel better lol.

The previous games didn't have this amount of stuff locked and it's especially icky that they did it now that it's a paid thing.

ughhh it's a tough line! I'm 34 and like... I absolutely can afford the fee and I LOVE. love the social aspect of AC so I ended up feeling like it probably was worth it overall for me on a personal level to just yoooo with it... but I really wish there was a way to pay for it and still somehow indicate that I think it's kinda nonsense that they've turned it into a paid feature. :/ ALAS.

I thought you'd at least be able to send letters with items to friends without a Nintendo Online membership.. Nope, turns out you can't. They should at least make all fruits accessible through mystery islands if they're going to do this...
i think they did. I found oranges on a NMT island and my fruit is apples.

You can find your “sister fruit” on mystery islands, but it’s always the same fruit. For example, my native fruit is oranges and my sister fruit is apples, so those are the only ones I can ever find on mystery islands (except for coconuts ofc). Mom sends you another fruit at the beginning of the game too (for me it was cherries). The only way to get the others is to trade online.

Does sending villagers fruit in the mail work? I've heard some people say it works and others say they've never gotten fruit back or only got their native fruit.

In my experience, I've never gotten a fruit in the mail in NH (aside from the one from Mom), nor in return for actual gifts. Every day I used to send letters with wrapped fruit to all my villagers for that Nook Miles achievement and never once received a fruit from any of them in return. Nintendo really wants you buy the online membership. What annoys me the most is how all the items in Nook's are locked to a certain color on your island.

Also why does sending letters to your villagers not increase friendship points wtf

When it comes to what is locked behind online play, I think the most annoying thing Nintendo did was color-lock most items (especially the Nook Mile ones) which made it hard to decorate the town if you want a specific color scheme. I do realize there is a chance to get items from balloons, but that is only possible BY CHANCE. Even then, you still have to go other people's islands if you want a specific Nook Miles item variant.

When it comes to the fruit, I think it is possible to obtain them from villagers because I could have sworn I got a non-sister foreign fruit from a villager before (I believe it was an orange while my sister fruit is pears).

Dang, my favourite fruit in the game are apples so I guess I'll never have them unless mom sends me another fruit. Or unless I get online. But whether I get it or not I still think we shouldn't be FORCED to. Like if they want people to use their online they should add some fun stuff to it rather than lock away stuff we could do before for free or without needing to connect to the internet. Also not everyone enjoys playing online with strangers in case Nintendo doesn't know. Blaaa it's just not a nice gesture on their part.

My sister fruit is pears and that's the fruit I got from my in game mom, so I only got 2
I would be extremely frustrated if I didn't trade online

The Nook Miles items are certainly buzz killers for sure. Imagine trying to work a yellow lighthouse into your cottagecore themed island because you can’t do trading. Or getting a street lamp color that clashes with your entire aesthetic? Not only do you have to have online to trade for them, they even made them as non-catalog items...so you can’t just trade once and order again and again. You’d have to trade over and over again as many times as the number of street lamps you’ll need for your entire island! It’s ridiculous.

The item colour variations thing is really stupid to me. Why can't they just come in one colour and can be customized? Is Nintendo that desperate to make money?

👏👏👏 Yes, the fact that we have to pay to play online is very frustrating. My husband and I share a switch and he had switch online for Smash, but I didn't realize we needed Switch online so I made my Animal Crossing save on my profile. Therefore If I wanted to play as my character and travel, I needed to buy switch online. I wish we could just pay for it for our switch at least rather than profiles.

Like I've wanted the infused water dispenser for so long and FINALLY. Lobo was crafting it. but you need fruit from other towns which I can't access. This is nothing new for animal crossing considering wild world had things blocked off unless you played online, but to be fair you didnt have to pay to play with other people and the game wasn't $60. :|

I felt similar to you with the qr codes, even after I found out that I had enough on a gift card for a nintendo subscription. Even though the switch/switch lite are different systems, I was pretty ticked to find out you needed to have a subscription when in ACNL and HHD, you didn’t. On top of that, I can’t put up qr designs made by others or that I made in HHD or ACNL for my villagers to use (or give them the design as a piece of clothing itself) unless the original designer or I remade the design in ACNH.

Yeah it's annoying. I still don't have peaches or cherries. I only got lucky when I did island hopping on special islands. But you can only get so many that way and the others have to be obtained online by trading with someone else.

This is the very definition of pay to win. I miss being able to play the game and getting stuff by myself. Not knocking anyone who doesn't do it that way. I just like the challenge. But it's not even possible.
