Decorating Animal Villager Houses, yea or nay?

No, I dont bother. But i do agree with you, when you walk into a villagers house and all the furniture is gone but there are lots of bugs and fishes, its just weird. I try not to fulfill bug and fish requests now.

I probably take it too seriously.

No such thing. I used to buy their furniture back from the retail for them too but I quickly grew tired of buying the same pieces every three days or so and finally just filled my retail with flowers and fruits.

I want my villager's houses to look nice. If they ask for furniture, I'd like to give them something that looks and mesh well with the rest of the furniture they have in there. Like Mint has some Blue and Alpine furniture with Bossa playing in the background which makes it a pretty chill atmosphere. I can't help but fulfill their requests though. A few bugs and fish are okay, especially if it's like a goldfish on a table or something. Imo, having their houses look nice on the inside gives some personality and depth to the town too.

I've visited random dream towns where the villager houses have random giant fossil pieces and it looks really odd... On the other hand, I've seen something like Molly's house which looks extremely nice and classy that has flowers displayed on a table.

I also think it depends on how you style their house or how much thought you're going to put into it. If you're gonna go through the trouble (as I posted earlier), might as well make it worth it.

For example, the only villager in my town that has a fish is Julian, and that's because I thought it would be really cute to put a seahorse in his house. :) Then the rest of the furniture I gave him are very calm, white, and soothing, so his house, which started out as one of my favorites, is very peaceful. I feel like he's probably a masseuse or at least somehow very spiritual and he meditates a lot. lol, anyway basically I considered his personality.

So this is how I did a lot of their houses:

Marshal--I only swapped out a few of the dumber items for a couple of Nintendo items, just so his house would be a little bit of fun, but for the most part, I left it alone. I think his house fits his personality. And I really love to just hang out and watch TV with him. lol...well for like 20 seconds.

Pietro--I kept his house pretty much the same too, except I added even more balloon furniture. Which oddly enough is not his favorite thing. XD Too bad, because it fits his clown persona and is cute IMO. I happen to really like the balloon furniture, though it seems I'm forever alone on that one. ;_;

Sparro--He really had the ugliest house on earth originally. It took all that I could do, piece by piece to change it into something worthy of him. I think I did a good job, as now I like it in there. I tried to make it really brown with earth tones, and then added some Nintendo glowy items and the Palm Tree Lamp, which fits the color theme, IDK I think it all looks really nice now.

Stitches--Is my little boy, I love him and I wanted him to have a cute little room. Parts of it are super childish though, so it's a mishmash really of anywhere from toddler to pre-teen...lol, IDK...it's what I imagined would make him happy.

Muffy--I decided she had a chocolate fetish, so I kept her rococo furniture and just put chocolate items around it, like chocolate cake, a chocolate fountain, box of chocolates, cacao tree...and she just loves to sit down when I'm over, so it always looks like she's binged on it all. :D <3 My kind of girl.

Merengue--Her theme is pastries and yumminess, so she got a birthday cake, a chocolate cake, and a wedding cake. A sweets player, and a couple of other delish looking items, her house looks like heaven. :D I can't go in there a lot, it makes me hungry.

Moniqueand Fuchsia--gave me a really hard time with their houses! Partly I think because they didn't start out too nice. So it was a lot of work, and...then some more work. I'm pretty happy now as I think they both look fairly good. But they aren't my absolute favorite houses or anything. Just as good as I could get them.

Carmen--I feel like she's a cute but cool little girl, kind of like Suzie from Calvin and Hobbes. Except super peppy and happy. So Suzie on drugs. XD I admit Carmen's house is my least favorite, even though she is actually my absolute favorite villager. But the real thing I'm proud of is that I got her to change the huge ugly robo table in the middle of her house. That was the Herculean task with her house. after that, everything else is icing on the cake.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that got tired of bug and fish requests. I was always relieved when they'd approach me and tell me that the bug or fish I got them was ruining their room and they wanted something else to put there. Eventually I just got tired of giving them bugs and fish all together. For a long while I was just buying things back they put in Re-tail and sending them to them in the mail, hoping they'd decorate their homes with it.

I have actually been tempted to start trying this. A few of my villagers were gifts from friends and therefore nowhere close to original, and while this didn't used to bother me much, ever since I've been getting back into the game and getting dreamies it feels like it matters more.

I now keep re-tail full of overpriced flowers to keep villagers from selling their stuff, which they seemed to LOVE to do. It feel sort of bad doing this, since it is sort of a part of the game and all, but it ended up being really time consuming to mail the villagers back their stuff. And it wasn't just small stuff they'd sell, a lot of them would try to sell their beds and that just drove me insane.

That said, I do try to send them nice furniture when they ask, but I've never tried to change up a villager's house layout completely. I'd like to give it a try in the future though, probably with one of the ones whose house is really badly messed up.

I attempt to maintain my villagers' homes if they were nice to begin with (Lionel's classy house), or give them specific furniture sets/re-furbished furniture sets. My methods consist of accepting but never fulfilling bug and fish requests (exception is when they ask for a river fish, then I get them a cute little goldfish), buying their Re-Tail furniture and giving/gifting it back when they ask for something, etc.

As for their clothing, I designed four varying tees they are welcome to choose from. Everyone is now wearing one, except for Vic, who grabbed a cafe shirt I made months ago. It looks good on him, so no harm done. Now when they talk, they switch into another pre-approved design, bahaha! Also if I deliver a gift that turns out to be a shirt they put on, I say they look ugly so they take it off. This doesn't always work, so I've gotten into a habit of saving and continuing before delivering the item.

You should fill Re-Tail with superb coffee beans instead. Villagers can buy them, but don't display them. No mess and I weasel money out of them. My beans are priced at 7,500 bells. This does require working at the cafe daily, but I like seeing new visitors come for coffee. c:

I really enjoy redecorating my villagers' houses if I'm planning on keeping them in my town. It takes some patience, but it's possible.

I've never had villagers swap furniture and I'm glad for that. Keeping everything in my Re-Tail priced at 999,999 helps with villagers trying to get rid of their furniture. I always say yes when they ask me for bugs or fish but then I never follow through with it unless I think it would fit their personality and houses.

I've had villagers swap clothes with each other and it's horrible because I swear they always choose the worst shirts. I had some luck when I made a custom design for a villager and it caught on for a while, since it looked nice on most of them. Until the ugly shirt trend caught up again. :(

Really! Thank you - I shall try that *clings onto that one & only Sloppy sofa* XD

You can mail it to him before one of the mail rounds (I use the 5 PM one), check his house a few minutes after the hour to see if he put it up and where, and reset if you're unhappy with the placement. This is kind of annoying, but at least it's safer for rare items. :)

There was even a brief, Angel-Choir-Singing moment where he was using the modern wood wallpaper, too.

I had no idea you could change their wallpaper! I've given them wallpaper and carpets as birthday gifts or when they ask me to trade with them, because I thought that at least those were things they couldn't wear or put in their houses, no matter how ugly. Plus, they're easy to find. How exactly do you change their wallpaper?

This is really good advice! I never thought about doing that and it's a great idea.

I also save my game before I deliver anything, or I'll save, check what it is, and then deliver it only if it's not something horrible like a shirt they already own in dozens.

I think it's alright for my villagers to decorate their house as they please.

Although it gets a bit annoying whenever I visit Wolfgang and his intimidating fossil collection tries to gang up on me every time.

Sometimes it's hilarious when stuff doesn't match.

I went into Ankha's house and there was a lone filing cabinet among all the Egyptian themed things. Coincidentally she offered it for sale, and Colton immediately pinged me for it when I left her house.

I'm thinking of sending Ankha a brown wardrobe of some kind. Although, disturbingly I did find that the mummy casket is actually a storage item... o_O

i've only really tried decorating rolf's house (he only had a few pieces of furniture i had to), other than villagers asking for furniture and me looking around for something that might look good with their current house. i usually just let them buy stuff from each other in retail and assume they know what they're doing
i feel like i shouldn't do that as much though, because claudia bought a robo couch and i know it's not going to look good.

I had no idea about this, that's so weird! How do you even store that many things in a mummy casket?
Same logic as how a fridge is storage... for your clothes. o_O

I'm half tempted right now to give Bob all the Balloon furniture. He has all the kiddie stuff atm so I think a slight change would be nice. :D

It's funny when you see fossils inside their houses :p

As for the question, I like to keep the default as much as possible. When I do requests, I usually give them back their own furniture.

I always fulfil anything a villager asks of me and give them furniture based on what I have readily available as I consider seeing how awful I can make my villager's homes look an unofficial mini-game. Tammy is very stubborn about changing her shirts and has five in her house right now, and when I visited Punchy's house today he had four fish.

I don't fulfill their requests because I'm lazy and like seriously, can't they just catch the fish/bug themselves, some of them even mentioned that it's a common fish/bug, THEN WHY CAN'T THEY GO AND GET IT THEMSELVES HUH???

You know what Punchy said to me when I tried to buy his salmon off him? "Go and catch your own." Punchy, you only own that fish because I CAUGHT IT FOR YOU!!!

It's also really creepy when you see skeletons and muscle structure models in their houses. Moe freaked me out the first time I visited him. o_O

There is an anatomical model inside his house, by default xD I think I'm fine with seeing them just as long as they don't exchange their bed with a single fossil part or their houses are full of bugs/fishes O__O

Sometimes, I give furniture that matches the others (like in the same series) :)

I try, try to keep their houses original, so I send them the furniture they've sold off etc. in a mail or use the furniture favor (when it pings).

Why do these villagers dislike their own furniture so much?

When I first started playing, I didn't care about the interiors of their houses, and so they would have mismatched furniture and fossils all over the place. Especially poor Lily. But now I try to maintain their original furniture or at least have all their stuff match. I filled up Re-Tail with stuff priced at 999,999 bells each so that they won't put their things up for sale. My favorite houses are Chester, Lolly, and Marshal, so I hope I can keep them up. The worst house I've got is Muffy. When I adopted her, she wasn't original, which I didn't mind. But then she sold off most of her furniture - for a while she only had a rococo table, a fish, a poinsettia, and a record player in her house. I did get to buy her Taurus bathtub off of her though, because I'd missed that DLC, haha. I've been trying to give her more rococo furniture and other stuff that would go well, like a piano. I was annoyed the other day because I gave her a refurbished rococo lamp to try to replace the fish and plant she had on her table but she wouldn't put display it.

Also, regarding clothes, I'm gonna try the trick I read on here about getting them to change by sending them five of the same shirt in the mail. And also changing the displays at Able Sisters to dresses and umbrellas, things they won't wear.
