Customization and Tool Durability - Likely An Intended Feature?

I’ve heard some speculation/worry from people across various AC communities that customization resetting tool durability is a “bug” or may be “patched out” in future updates. However, I found something that, IMO, points to it being an intended feature.

I am trying to not forget the Japanese I’ve learned (started learning when I was a child, but I would NOT say I am native speaker level. Probably about N3 on the JLPT language exam) so I switched the system language to Japanese to challenge myself.

In Japanese, customization kits are called “remake” (リメイク) kits, and if I’m understanding correctly, ”remake” implies something like... recycling? Or upcycling? Which would explain why the durability resets - I guess your character is refurbishing the tool and not just recoloring it.

I’m posting this here so if anyone is more fluent than me you can correct me or help elaborate! I don’t want to spread rumors or cause confusion. If this is already confirmed via datamining, etc and repetitive I can also remove it!

I think if tool durability is a "bug", it should've been patched back in April considering it's widely known and obvious especially at this point.

Oh that’s a good point! Nintendo has been super fast at patching all the well-known glitches. Hopefully between these two observations, anyone worrying about losing their tool durability can put their fears to rest!

Also the fact that the unbreakable tools like the ladder and vaulting pole cannot be customised shows that the customising was intended for the tools that break, so that you can remake them, as you said. It's sad though because I really want to customise the ladder and vaulting pole XD

yeah, they'd of patched it out by now if it truly was a bug

though there's also the chance that it was a bug, but because of how widespread it became without harming anything, nintendo decided it'd be better to keep in vs remove and face backlash over

I just wished they allowed us to customize golden tools, so I could change it to a silver variant and maybe some "jeweled" ones as well

リメイク doesn't really have any special meaning; it's directly borrowed from English. So yeah, the tool gets remade when you customize and it's an intended feature.

i definitely feel like it was intentional as nintendo likely would’ve patched it by now if it wasn’t ;;

I’d buy this. It’s the concept of the axe that belonged to your great grandfather. The handle and axe head have been replaced but it’s still your great grandfather’s axe. There are also shrines in Japan that are hundreds of years old but are made of wood that gets periodically replaced as it rots or splinters. It’s still considered the same shrine, even though everything about it may have been replaced at least once over the centuries.

+1. There's some loan words (from both English and other languages) that Japan uses exactly like the original language does, but there's some that uses it differently to varying degrees. When the Japanese say the English word "remake", this is something that varies depending on context. They CAN literally use it to mean remake, like, well, Biohazard RE:2 (the Japanese name of the Resident Evil 2 remake, the RE is short for remake and is referencing the fact that the game is a remake). Or it can be used in this customization context. You are REMAKING something. That's why they use it that way. But English generally just uses customize in the context, so that's why they changed it for the English translation.
