In your case, Apollo would definitely be such an appropriate choice, and it's good for sentimental reasons!
But in terms of my preference, I really like Chief and Fang. I think out of all the cranky types, I'm very impartial to the wolves since I think they're very well designed. Otherwise, I would also recommend Apollo though. I still don't have a cranky villager to this day, and I'm kind of in the same boat of debating who I would want to bring over to my island.
Butch is the cutest~ He has cranky traits but its mainly just him complaining about his aching bones. He's so sweet, especially when you develop a stronger friendship with him. He's my favorite cranky honestly.
Apollo has also grown on me a lot. He's such a cutie and also sweet once you talk to him more. He also has a nice house~
I'm all about Dobie. I mean, Wolfgang and Chief are also cute (I love cranky wolves for some reason) BUT look at that cute little grizzled face! Cranky villagers seem even older in this game than previous ones, and I couldn't take villagers like Wolfgang or Chief seriously if they tried to tell me how old they are. They don't look old at all. But Dobie's got that greying muzzle. He's clearly seen some things in his long life. And he's probably got great stories to tell...

I just put Boris in boxes today and it's killing me. He is so great! His default outfit is a desert costume, with a purple vest, so I just naturally kept dressing him in slightly wacky gear & he can wear anything and look cool as a cucumber. He--like most crankies--really rocks a bomber jacket. His house looks like an Egyptian temple. He was just such a great villager.
I'm replacing him with Roscoe, though, who just looks so cool to me. Can't wait to have the demon horse roaming my island.
I forgot to mention that I'm collecting photos, so I don't plan to make any of them permanent, and will probably cycle them out for a different villager after a while.
So I'll have room for a lot of these suggestions, and I plan to come back to this thread for them.

Nobody likes Rolf? I just invited him from my campsite a few days ago and wasn’t even remembering of his existence until then, but pretty much fell in love with him instantly! <3
