The News is reporting The military has taken or attempted to take contol of the State and tryed to kill PM.

yeah i saw it on the news. donmt know anything else than that really but i just hope it won't start a war or something.

The army claims that they did it to protect the country's constitution, which states Turkey needs to be a democratic secular state, and they feel democracy is dead under the current regime (paraphrasing). They're kinda right.
Erdogan is already making threats, as he likes to do.

Erdogan is one of those people who I wouldn't cry about if he died.

Really pretty scary and awful, thoughts are with everyone already affected, I hope everyone else is able to stay safe.

There's already a lot of things happening.
Erdogan asked people to go onto the streets to protest the coup, and there are now crowds gathering in various places.
A military helicopter fired on the building of the Turkish intelligence agency. Apparently two missiles were also fired at the TRT HQ (state TV), but I can't find any confirmation on that.
Tanks are driving through the streets of Ankara.
Explosions and shots in both Ankara and Istanbul. People tried to cross the Bosporus bridge in Istanbul and were fired at by the military, it's still unsure how many have been hurt/killed.
Istanbul mosques are sounding the azan constantly, even though it's not the time for prayer.

So yeah, it's not going great.

AFP reporting on Twitter that the military opened fire on crowds in Istanbul and there's an unknown number of casualties.

We can't even get through 24 hours after one horrible event before the **** hits the fan somewhere else.

Oh wow thanks for sharing info.

265 dead. 161 of those are government supporters, 104 are members of the coup army. At least 1440 injured, and 2839 people from the army have been arrested for the coup attempt.

Turkish prime minister is now talking about reinstating the death penalty in order to prevent other coup attempts.

It's not the first time Turkey has tried, and it's probably not going to be the last. There's a lot of unrest for the area. It's old views are clashing with the modern world, and the people are divided. Couple that with a man whose been in power for over a decade, and people are bound to feel disenfranchised.

Tbh I don't even understand this story what's going on? 0~0
Part of the Turkish army tried to commit a coup last night. That means they wanted to take control of (at least part of) the country from Erdogan's government. Force was used on both sides, but government forces quickly gained the upper hand and suppressed the uprising.

The coup army's motive was that they feel Erdogan's government has smothered democracy in Turkey. The constitution states that Turkey needs to be a democratic state, so this was basically their attempt at enforcing the constitution.

This happened in a country where there's a lot of unrest. People are divided, with half of the country supporting Erdogan and the other half thinking he should leave. Under the regime a lot of freedoms have also been taken away, and there's a lot of criticism that Turkey hasn't done enough in the fight against terrorism, but instead has made it worse.

The support shown by other countries last night was to be expected. Turkey is a member of NATO, and a fairly important one at that. So even if politicians think Erdogan and his lackeys can go **** themselves, they say they support him because they don't want to lose an ally like that.
