I hear a lot about save data being corrupted and I want to know more about what causes it. This is one of those games like Pokemon where you could easily spend hundreds of hours playing and your work could disappear in a flash. I'd really like to get first-hand accounts from people who say their game got corrupted. I'm starting to get paranoid that it could happen to me.

We don't know exactly what causes it. I've heard that people reset and then it's gone, I've heard that people's cartridge popped out and it's gone, and I've heard some tried to have 2 digital towns to find out the first one is corrupted. Then, if that didn't scare you, some people just loaded up their game and it's all gone!
So, we don't know.

Sorry if that scares you.

Don't turn your game off as it's saving, and make darn sure your cartridge and SD card stay in place while the game is still running.

I think someone asked this over on ACC once and I heard it was more common with the digital copy...but I would follow Dembonez advice. If you're ever on wi-fi and it's taking particularly long to save..I wouldn't shut off the wi-fi or power it down. I know someone got their file corrupted that way.

my last save file was corrupted by me turning the game off too fast! i was in a rush and i pressed the power button as it just stopped saving. ever since then i've waited until the title screen came on before turning off uwu
and i also wouldn't recommend randomly going to the home screen! i noticed when i was resetting for my new town that the game would glitch occasionally when pressing the home button
it's probably nothing but... i'd rather not risk losing my file again ;3;

I dropped my DS and the game card came out. My main town is a digital copy now. :( Worst. I lost my fave villagers and still haven't got them all back.

Definitely let the save screen be done completely, even let the AC logo appear up just to be safe. I also go to the 3DS' home screen before shutting the system off. I probably sound really paranoid right now. v-v

Interrupting a save is pretty obviously bad in general. It is writing into a file same as you would on a computer and interfering with that is the most common source of data corruptions. I am disturbed by reports of putting your town to sleep normally one night, waking up the next and it is gone.

I'm so scared of this happening.. id be devastated to lose everything
if i did, i doubt id start again..

I wish Nintendo would acknowledge and address this.

It's no flaw that Nintendo can resolve. A corrupted game is caused by the user not by a miss function of the game or handheld device.

The game has been tested plenty of times before it was released. If it would be a common problem than half of this forum would have encountered a corrupted game by now. If you use your game for what it was intended for, and don't mess up the saving cycle, you will be absolutely fine.

Save and Quit. Wait for the AC:NL screen to appear, press Home, and end the power when you are back at the DS Home screen. If you are stuck in a saving cycle while trying to visit someone Resetti will appear in 2 or 3 minutes and will bring you back to before you entered the train station. You can also consider turning off your WiFi which will also bring Resetti since you lost contact with the internet.

I always always wait for the home screen to show up before turning off the game. Trauma to the card (physical copy) will corrupt your game too I think. So just go slow with saving and don't whack your card with a hammer, and you should be fine :P

I corrupted my first save. I was time travelling to get gracie. when i accedentaly loaded the game and instead of changing the time i clicked 'lets go'. i then turned off the power bcuz it takes for ever if i have to save and quit again. i loaded the game and poof. gone.

Agreed. If it's the user's fault there is nothing Nintendo can do about it. Take care of your game and you'll be fine.

This game doesn't have a back-up save file like Pokemon, so if you turn your game off in the middle of saving, you'll lose your data permanently. That is a major mistake of Nintendo. What they should do to make up for their mistake is let you back up your save file on a cloud device and give you a code to redeem your save data if you lose it. They also need to let you update that backed-up save data. In Pokemon, Nintendo's already saving some data on cloud with Pokemon. It's not exactly a backup but you could use it that way.

I don't know if they should.
I've said this before, but maybe it's more of a business thing than anything else.
If you made an announcement to a bunch of your customers about save files being corrupted, how many people would be reluctant to buying it (again)?

Shutting the 3DS off after it's done saving does absolutely nothing. I've been turning my game off on the screen that says "Saving complete! See you soon!" since June 9th. If it's done saving, it's done. Returning to the home screen doesn't do a single thing.

What about the people whose games load up and it all of a sudden says there file has been corrupted. I've seen many, many users create save file corruption threads, and they are cautious when saving. How can it be the users fault when they're doing what they're told to do?

Honestly there's like a 90% chance that they did do something, whether they know it or not. If that was a common thing then Nintendo would fix it, but it's not.
