I hate the layout, the lack of any real planning (QR codes and paths and such was completely unknown to me until I got it, I just knew I wanted the new AC game and boom, Christmas present) and now that I've clocked a good 90+ hours into the game I'm way more confident I could do it justice and actually make a nice theme of things and make a lovely little town.
But at the same time, I've put so much time into this. I can really feel like I want a fresh start, but at what cost? I don't mind TTing, that's not a huge deal for me, but I've spent so much time trying to make my house nice and gather up items and put bells into this and that and ect.

Also, Colton. He moved in one day and he is officially my all time favorite. I kind of want a purely horse town now, but of course I could always buy him from someone.

Thoughts?

Well I restarted last April and I saved some of my bells and fave stuff. I also didnt like where I put certain PWPs. I got my nephew to hold my stuff until I got a map I wanted and it was a process but worth it. I saved 7 million of my bells cause I wanted my house to have all the upgrades. Downsize is that Gracie hasnt come by to my town yet.

Well when I first got the game on launch, I picked one of the first 4 town layouts because I really just wanted to get playing the game. While I wasn't left with a terrible layout, it has eventually got the better of me and I bought a new copy, because I wanted a fresh start, but didn't want to lose my whole town. So what I am saying, is unless you are 100% happy with your town, I would reset before you get too attached to it. You can always try to get Colton off of the villager trading board!

Yeah, that's what I did, just picked the first one I saw and started up. And now I majorly regret not doing more research before hand. I feel like I would have planned so much better. I feel like I have my answer if I've spent the last week or so thinking it over but always putting off making the decision.

I suggest trying to work around with your current town. I used to dislike my town map in my main town. I went straight with the first map because I didn't know there was other options. I was able to actually like the way my town looked after I started working around with it. I visited dream towns and that helped a lot. I also wanted to restart my main town but I had worked so much on it and I had obtained almost all my dreamies so I had no choice to work with it.

I was in a similar situation to yours.
My town layout wasn't that good, villager houses were in bad places, PWPs placed horrible, Chrissy moved out of my town (which meant that I needed to complete the 16 villager cycle), and overall I was just upset with my town.
I decided about resetting several times but went against it since I'll be losing lots of items, millions of Bells and over 70 hours of playtime. But I also wanted a fresh start, so I bought a second copy. Keep in mind that where I live, games are expensive. Animal Crossing New Leaf can still retail ~$70, and the lowest I've seen is $55 online that works for my region.
I resetted on January 4th and one of my friends held my items for me. I ended up with a good town map and everything is going fine. Now I'll just need to get the PWPs and Dreamies to place their houses in the designated areas.

Resetting means that you'll be able to know what to do, such as choosing the right town map, unlocking upgrades/PWPs, as well as villager plot resetting so that they won't move into a bad place.

I recently reset two weeks ago from today and have no regrets. I had people hold my stuff and the 5 villagers i wanted to make the journey with me. I replied to you in the Resetting Thread if you need someone to hold your stuff. Drop a PM if you have any questions/would like me to hold your stuff.

90 hours? I say go for it. Get a holder, even though it may not seem like much time to you it will get harder and harder to decide as time passes.

I recently restarted one of my towns. I hated the map so bad. There didn't seem too much space to landscape and my adorable villagers were crammed in one area. I felt like I had made a mistake at first, because it was so much work to get where I was, but now that i'm caught up I feel it was worth it.

It was a bit easier for me though, because I had bought an extra copy for real cheap and I have two 3ds's, so I was able to move bells, hybrids, and furniture and my adorable villagers over to the new town.I had all ten of my dreamies and I didn't want to lose them.

Since you just have the one villager that you want to keep, I think it should be fairly easy to get him back from the villager trade plaza. And I sold my bell tree bells to help me with my upgrades. You might enjoy the game more if you restart. Also, since you don't mind time travel, then you should be back to where you were in no time.

I restarted yesterday and I'm already so much happier! I lost several dreamies, 4 of which were tier 1, which is the worst part because I know I'm going to have to go though a lot of hassle to get them back! But I really recommend it, my layout is a lot better than it was before, though I still have NO clue with what to do with paths etc. I actually really need some help with that! But it also gives me a chance to start over and have new dreamies etc. :P
I was extremely hesitant to re-start but I gave all my villagers and furniture etc away, so other people managed to get villagers they really wanted, for free! And that just made me feel good, tp be able to give other people their dreamies!

If you really hate it and you know you won't regret losing the work you've put into your current town, go for it! Why be stuck with a layout that makes you unhappy? Now you know more and you can make better decisions.

If you really hate your town, it might be for the best to just reset it. Even if you've put a lot of effort into your game so far, it's best to do it when you only have 90 hours instead of a higher number. It'll be hard work but you can make up for it, and you can get someone to hold your items for you. You could also get someone to hold Colton, it's much harder when people have a full set of 10 villagers they like.

Otherwise, if you think you'd just be discouraged by all that effort, you can just keep playing with your town. You could find ways to make the things you hate look nicer, and you don't need to have a perfect map to have a town that looks good and interesting.

90 hours isnt a lot
if you really want to make your town better and plan it and all that, then reset.

You can if you want. There's no stopping someone's opinon. If you have an item you like though, you can always ask a friend to hold it for you.
