Chief - Fox or Orange Wolf?

I always thought of chief to be a fox, like flora is a flamingo, erik is a moose, and papi is an okapi. It's interesting to see villager variations like that, when a certain species' appearance is slightly altered to make a new sub species of villager. Some people think he's just an orange wolf though, so I'm curious to see... Do you think he's a fox or an orange wolf?

It's possible that he could be modelled after a fox- after all, Kyle's design is base on a hyena, if I recall. But would that alteration be done more than once per species?

If Redd didn't exist, i would agree he is a fox but since there is a fox, i think hes an orange wolf

I would agree, but I think redd is more based on the kitsune, a fox-like creature in Japanese mythology. Same with Kap'n and Tom Nook, as they are made to look like turtles and raccoons in the western versions when in reality they are based on tanukis and kappas.

Kyle is based on an African Wild Dog, not a hyena.

And I've always considered Chief to be a Maned Wolf tbh. Same color scheme.

I think Chief resembles a fox, because of his colouration with the red-orange basic colour and paws, muzzle and tale in white.

I always thought he was a fox until I looked it up and learned otherwise. A lot of the wolf models are so angular and whatnot, I thought they were MEANT to be foxes. I'm secretly thankful that they're not, though, because I don't like the wolf villagers' looks, and if we ever get a proper fox species I want them to be cuties like Redd.

He looks like an orange wolf to me. I wouldn't find it hard to believe that he was based off of a fox though.

I'd say a fox! He doesn't really look like a wolf at all so...
