I've been putting out garbage on the beach (shoes, cans and tires) in the hopes that I'd finally get a fly but have not been able to spawn any.
I put it out during the time I play and then take it down when I quit the game so that it doesn't negatively affect my Island rating.
Do flies only spawn during specific times of the day?

Think u need to keep old tin can out for a few days, one item won’t impact your star rating

I think ants spawn more often than flies. I caught a fly by running towards a rotten turnip scaring away the ants, then returning to check if there is a fly. Rinse and repeat!

They are just extremely rare. I had placed garabe and rotten turnips throughout my town and finally found one after hours of searching 3 days in a row.

Also, don't put rotten turnips in grass/dirt. It will attract ants. Use some kind of stone path.

From my experience, flies usually tend to spawn around the evenings, and can be seen wandering anywhere. I remember I was doing some terraforming and I got stung by them like three different times. Usually you can tell that they're there because they make a slight buzzing noise. They're a bit hard to see first, but you'll see them moving around.

I can't comment on whether or not they spawn more frequently with garbage items, since I have never tried that.

Those are mosquitoes! ^w^ Flies Are a separate bug and spawn with garbage!

I don't know if they spawn if you put them on the beach. Try putting a decent amount in an open place, a bit spread out (like 2 spaces between each)? This worked for me personally. They can be rather difficult to see, and it might be a good idea to put them at a place you pass by often

I just left some tires on the ground and the next time I passed by it, there was a fly. It took me like five minutes, I think.

I put put a spoiled turnip and I usually always have a fly or ants attached to them!
I got ants from rotten turnips before. Might just try that though I won't have spoiled turnips as I sold mine already.

flies will also show up! they're usually sitting on the turnip and I never see them unless I run over the turnip xD But yeah, just chase off the ants!

Thanks!

Do you know if they will spawn on just one piece of garbage or if I need to keep several.

I was having the exact same problem as you. garbage on the ground would do nothing. But I found a trick that worked for me. You need a rotten turnip and the ability to make paths. Make a brick or stone path, a large square big enough around the turnip so ants won't spawn. Place the turnip on the path area and walk away for a while. and keep going back. After I did that, they started spawning.

Alternatively, if you put the paved area right in front of a shop, you can go into the shop and come back out. A chance for spawning each time you leave the store,
