Catching a Char?!

How the crap do I catch a Char?

I was trying for hours today. I read that they appear in the place where the river meets the ocean, but all I caught there was Salmon and King Salmon. I saw someone catch one there in a Youtube video, but they had a south-facing river mouth, and mine is east-facing. In another post I saw online (ACNL wiki?) they said that only some town layouts allowed Chars to be caught by the southern waterfall?? and that I should fish in the northern waterfall pond.

Which would be great and all, but I couldn't get any Chars to spawn on the north waterfall, and I must've Save and Continued several dozen times.

I didn't even have this much trouble catching a Coelacanth, jeez....

Does anyone know a foolproof method of catching a Char?

I tried for days and days to catch a char, where my river met my ocean, and never ever caught it. Someone on here suggested I try the very top of my waterfall (so where the water fall "begins" as it were). And within about 15 caught it. I hope i explained it right, sometimes I wonder if i communicate these things well.

I find that what helps them spawn beneath the waterfalls a lot is to go diving around that area. Swim out until it's off your screen and then back again. You should see shadows appear in the water beneath the falls there in no time. And it's more likely to be a Char than it is a Salmon or King Salmon.

You can catch the Char from 4 AM to 9 PM ... Stand at the top of the waterfall and cast ... Let the bobber go over the falls down into river mouth ... The Char is often invisible, hidden under the waterfall ... Wait for a nibble and be fast ... If you are not successful, save and continue ... Repeat the process ... Eventually, you will catch one

I caught 6 yesterday while chatting to a friend. I just stood at the top of the waterfall that meets the ocean, it was about 5pm and just kept throwing my rod in until it fell into the ocean and I kept catching them inbetween chatting, good luck.

Yeah, that's what I was doing! Letting the bobber fall down the waterfall and go into the ocean. I must have caught like 20 salmon and king salmon, but no chars. It was around 2 PM. Gahhh.

I guess I just gotta keep trying....

R u sure ur standing at the top of the waterfall and not on the beach?

Since your catching salmon near the river mouth, I'm guessing that:

* it's between sept 1st and 15th in your town still (otherwise the salmon would migrate up to the river)
* and your standing on the beach, because salmon won't spawn unless your standing on the beach

Well, you're right about all those things....

But, now it's the 16th, I'm standing on the cliff and not the beach, and I'm still just catching salmon and king salmon.... after my bobber goes down the waterfall. :?

Okay, so I FINALLY caught one after catching an entire inventory load of salmon. Yaaaaay!!!!

When I first tried to catch a char in this game, I was confused when they said waterfall. I didn't know they were referring to the waterfall at the mouth of the river, not at the lake near the cliff.
