So, the Nintendo Zone stuff is very confusing, and I haven't been able to find decent instructions online on how to do it? I've missed out on some Animal Crossing DLC already, and with the Hoopa distribution for Pok?mon happening in about a month, I could really use some assistance.

The Nintendo Zone application on the 3DS is discontinued, though apparently the zones are still a thing. I can still detect and connect to the McDonald's wifi from the settings menu, but I don't know how to accept their terms and agreements to actually use the wifi. I've gone into the browser and waited, then tried opening webpages, but nothing so far... I've tried asking the McDonald's staff but they don't even seem to know what a Nintendo Zone is... Now, I have managed to connect to a Nintendo Zone before, back when the application was active, but I've no clue how to do it now. Or even if it's still available in Canada?

I believe that the Canadian Nintendo Zones in McDonald's is discontinued long time ago, as a reddit post says so. That means you'll have to look out for another place that supports Nintendo Zone, such as Home Depot.

Can't use half of my McDonalds either they're all being refurbished with self serve points where you insert your plastic majic and use the touchscreen to order...

I am having this problem also with McDonald's. I am not sure if I should go to Home Depot (the nearest one is quite a ways away) or just try to find someone online with the DLC. Have any Canadians been able to get Nintendo Zone to work in Home Depot or another place or is it just removed from Canada.

I didn't realize Home Depot was a Nintendo Zone here. There's one in my town, so I'll ask about it next time I'm there. Thanks!

Well the app appears on your 3DS once your device manages to connect with a Nintendo Zone. Where i live, in the Netherlands, we have Nintendo Zones in every game mania store (a game store obviously), and sometimes in hotels, amusement parks, or even big restaurants! So there are all sorts of places where you can find a Nintendo Zone, at least here, i do not know how it works in Canada. Isn't there some sort of Nintendo Zone finder on the Nintendo website? I mean it exists on the dutch Nintendo website so it would be weird if it isn't a thing in Canada.

I find it easiest just to use the good ol' "change your SSID" trick for Nintendo Zone stuff. It's a broken mess in Canada as JC mentioned.
