Can you STOP a villager from moving into your town?

Say you're visiting a friend's town, and they have a villager you DO NOT want in boxes. But you've already visited their town and you only have 9 villagers. Can you somehow stop their villager-in-boxes from moving to your town?

If you talk to the villager and tell them to NOT move into your town, will they respect your wishes? I know not talking to the villager-in-boxes at all doesn't work, and they will probably move into your town anyway. Or if you don't play your game for a few days after visiting your friend, will they stop trying to move in?

If you tell them not to move in, they won't. Or, they never have for me. If you're asking if you can stop them from moving in from the void by not playing, no, that won't work. You never know if you're going to pick up void chum or not. Just go up to them and tell them to stay the hell away from your town and they will.

Well, if you haven't talked to them at all, then you should be somewhat safe, if you don't streetpass them and/or if you don't wifi trade or visit them in any way afterwards. As long as the villager has not been voided yet, you might have a chance. But if the villager has been voided, you most likely will get them. Just get your friend to have someone adopt the moving villager and everything should be a-okay!

You can clear the void by asking another villager to move in! It accidentally happened to me once. I asked Marina to move in. And then I asked Flora to move in on the same day. But when the plot showed it was for Flora, and I never did get Marina

If the villager is still in boxes, they're not on your friend's void so they're not going to randomly move into your town, don't worry. If you're worried, just talk to them and when they ask if they can move to your town, say no.

You only really need to worry if a villager has moved out of your friend's town and not been invited elsewhere, because they can be in your friend's void. The simplest way to keep them from moving is by inviting someone else to live in your town. If it takes you some time to do that, just time travel to stay on the same day (as long as you don't go past the 6 AM mark, you should be fine) until you've invited the other villager.
