Can villagers visit your house in the game like in New Leaf?

I really miss villagers visiting. I feel in general they reduced villager interaction in this game way too much. I've been popping back into NL to play with some friends that don't have a Switch and villagers are constantly asking me to get them things, deliver things, get a petition signed, or visit. I can understand people finding it annoying sometimes because it seems nearly constant in NL, but now it feels almost non existent in NH.

NL overall feels like it has more charm than NH, imo
like they wanted to focus more on terraforming and making your island your own because the only way you could do that in NL was by romhacking/save editing. don't get me wrong, there's tons of nice qol changes in NH, but NL just felt more soulful in comparison, the villagers actually interacted with you and each other instead of repeating (literally) the same 2-3 lines. idk. at least there's potential for future updates, so that's what i'll continue hoping for.

I'm one of the very few who loved the visits, especially the unannounced ones...it made the game feel more lively and less robotic. I always thought it was weird how you would just show up at villager's houses but they would never come to yours. Thought it was a great part of NL.

It also fits those best friend memes where you'd show up unannounced like it was your own house. And the fact that they'd gift you something too which was so sweet.

Safe to say I definitely miss when villagers actually interacted with you more...

I totally agree, NL has more charm. That's not to say NH doesn't have it's charm! There's a lot of stuff that makes it special.

NL did feel more lively than NH, however NH does have more animations for the villagers + they actually ask you about stuff you've did the day before. It's cool, though NL just gave you more stuff to do with your villagers. I hope they improve it in a future update.
