Can Villagers Change their Minds About Moving Without Telling You?

So recently Curlos told me that he was planning on leaving on the 29th (July). It is now the 31st and he's still here. I haven't talked to him once since he said he planned on leaving.

This is kind of annoying because while I don't mind Curlos, I was kind of curious to see who would move in after he leaves. And also because I still have all my starter villagers. So is there any way that a villager might change their mind about leaving without the player of knowing?

No, they’ll tell you if they change their mind about moving and you just gotta keep talking to him if you want him to stay. The dialogue eventually pop ups where the villager says they’re leaving soon and there’s the option of you wishing them the best/sending them off and another option to get them to stay. Then they can call off the move entirely.

Then I suppose it's possible I misread the date in which he said he was leaving? Since I've been actively avoiding him so as not to be tempted to talk to him and get him to change his mind.

You might’ve. I haven’t experienced an instance where the move in date wasn’t a guarantee unless I chose to have the villager stay. Have you TT’d at all or did any of the villagers mention Curlos’ moving day?

I tend to avoid time traveling, and no one's mentioned Curlos moving at all from what I remember.

Villagers will not change their mind about leaving unless the player asked them to stay. They occassionally might changed their mind, this only happens during dialogue. From my experience, it's usually because your friendship level with the villager in question is not high enough and the villager wishes to get to know you more

The possible scenarios I can think of about your situation:
- During the initial prompt when Curlos told you he was planning on leaving on the 29th, instead of letting him go, you asked him to stay.
- During the intial prompt when Curlos told you he was planning on leaving on the 29th, you let him go but he changed his mind.

Time travelling does not affect decisions made by villagers in my experience.

I'm pretty sure neither of those things happened, though, since Curlos specifically said something along the lines of "Let's make our last moments together count" or something like that.

Hmm that's odd  Maybe it's a glitch or something? Not quite sure

Something similar happened to me with Charlise. She never actually discussed moving with me—I heard rumors from my other villagers that she was planning on leaving, so I avoided talking with her so she wouldn't change her mind if I told her she could leave. About a week(?) later, my villagers stopped mentioning her move and started talking about other rumors (like the space prince one, etc.). She still hadn't left after several more days, someone else asked to move, and it wasn't until after they had moved out that Charlise asked me if she could move. (Thankfully she left on her intended date that time—I like Charlise, but after the first time, I was getting a little worried she might be a permanent villager whether I liked it or not. ^^; )

I don't time-travel, no one else plays my game, and I definitely never spoke with Charlise after I heard she was planning on moving, so it really seemed like she changed her mind on her own. Not sure if it's a glitch or what though.

I've heard of this happening to other players before. When I've had a villager tell me they're moving and I let them go,I always check with them a few days after their initial request to make sure they're leaving and the date they'll be gone.

Update, I guess: Isabelle informed me that Curlos will be leaving tomorrow, so I guess I just misread the date he said he would be leaving? I could have sworn he said 29th, though. But whatever, at least I'm not going insane.

I mean, that possibility is still there, but not because of Animal Crossing.
