Roald got stuck in my town for a month, and then in my daughter's town for something like 5 months. Have a side character talk to him just once, if you have a character that has not spoken to him yet. And only do the introduction talk. Then simply ignore him. Don't talk to him or send him letters and decline deliveries for him. This is my usual method and it takes 7 to 14 days, with or without time travel. Sometimes it takes way longer, like Roald in my daughter's town.

I think everybody has encountered THE VILLAGER at some point. My current one is Purrl. The best thing to do is befriend them and hope for the best.
