buying/trading with a villager while keeping them original?

so i have a 100% original julian (except for his shirt) which i love to death and talk to constantly. in one conversation he asked to buy my amethyst ore, but i rejected and he became sad and wouldnt talk to me for a while.

what items/favors are safe to give to villagers if you want to keep their house original (aka not have them place the item in their house, move anything, etc)
does rejecting favors for a villager reduce your friendship level with them (especially if they experience a negative mood change)?

I don't think there's really any way to tell whether or not an animal will use an item you give them. If they specifically ask for furniture, I think they'll always display the item you give them, but other than that, I think it's just kind of chance :')

I don't think friendship level goes down by just rejecting their requests (like if he pings to ask to buy your fish and you say no). I'm not sure if that's the case if you accept and then never deliver though. I'm currently trying to find every opportunity to give Chief a new piece of furniture because I want to transform his robo room into something that I think suits him better

I have gave away a lot of ore to Villagers, and I don't think they have used it. One of them might have displayed with, but that it about it. I think only the player has the ability to customize furniture.

I normally give them things for their walls when they ask for general furniture, I've never known them to display anything I've given them on their walls. I gave Marshal a sloppy clock a while back and have no idea what he did with it as its nowhere in his house. Maybe he sold sold it on or something or is planning to give it me back as a 'present'
As for friendship levels, I don't think they're affected by rejecting requests. I reject them quite frequently when I'm busy doing trades and I'm still best friends with all my villagers. I think I heard somewhere that it's better to reject a request rather than accepting and not fulfilling it? That might not be true though

Your friendship level doesn't go down unless it is a request that will make that little sound then they say thank you. Basically getting them fruit, delivering parcels or burying time capsules.
