Bushes count toward tree count?

This is going to make a lot of people disappointed if it is true...

There are two reasons that lead me to believe this might be the case:

1. Yesterday when I talked to Isabelle and got my town rating there were no complaints from her about tree count. This morning after I planted a lot of bush starts the complaint was there.

2. I got the NM+ achievement for planting trees just from planting bushes.

My apology if this has already been discussed. I went back a few pages and didn't see anything.

I am wondering this too. In past games, it didn't count towards the tree rating. I know I have literally the MAX number of trees allowed in NH to maintain a 5-star. I just planted 48 bushes- She's not complained about those yet. Will update after they grow! But I'm really hoping not :/ I really want to go for a natural theme, but I don't wanna lose my rating to do this. But if I have to, I guess I will??

Ah, okay, that helps to prove otherwise. I only planted bush starts, I haven't TTed to get them grown or anything. I just find it weird that I didn't plant any trees at all and got that message for the first time.

Yup it counts, got knocked down to 4 stars because of bushes. Now to figure out what trees to kill off. So irritated

I really hope we get an update that removes the tree limit for 5 stars. I can understand being docked for having junk and clutter on your island, but I don't know why having a lot of trees and bushes is considered a bad thing.

Wait they count as trees and not flowers? That means I can finally cut down all my trees!

I don’t think anyone knows how the game counts shrubs yet— I got the Nook Mile achievement for planting trees for planting them, but did not get it for moving trees when I moved grown ones. So there is inconsistent application in the game

Hmmm. That's interesting. Can you post a picture of your map? Maybe you have the trees spread out fairly evenly.

I’m still at 5 stars and I had the max amount of trees before the Earth Day update, and I’ve planted a bunch of shrubs since the update. Some aren’t fully grown yet and I planted even more starts today.

Let’s see what Isabelle has to say once they’re all grown...

i could but i don't think it will show the trees or bushes.
i know i had to cut down a TON of trees to get to 5 stars, and since then i've planted like . . . lmao idk 70+ bushes or something (and that's my conservative estimate).
unfortunately, i'm not dedicated enough to count all my trees or bushes haha
