So I first used yellow hibiscus, as they were easy to get, to map out where I wanted my bushes to be in my town. It saved money and I would know where a bush wouldn't grow.
I planted a vertical row of 7, planting all of them on the same day and they grew just fine.

I've now dug up the yellow hibiscus to replace them with sweet olive, assuming they would be fine.
I planted 6 on the same day and the 6th one did not grow. I dug it up, and planted another one - it didn't grow either.
The bushes are surrounded by pathways so no trees or other bushes are affecting them.

Can anyone help me on this problem? Do I need to dig up all the sweet olives and start again by planting 1 a day? It's weird how it worked with the hibiscus fine (and all my other bushes in town) but is not working now. It's the entrance to my town and i'll need to change it all if it doesn't work :(

Hi Evies!

I have an idea but I cant say it will help too much, Do you happen to TT? If you do and are going backwards it may not grow, this is possible as well as the sapling is too close to the cobblestone or another rock or tree. I can look around to see if anyone else has a solution so I'll keep you posted!

When planting anything, the max is 12 (in any direction, in a general area I think).

I think that's why your bush keeps dying. I know it dies on the 13th one if you try diagonally, vertically, or horizontally. I can't confirm if it also counts for a general area (i.e. in a big square where there are already 12 plants, the 13th won't grow?). I remember reading it, but can't recall for sure.

edit- ok, re-observed this picture (below). looks like if the plants are beside another one, it will count into the whole "12 max" thing

Or you could be planting in a dead spot. I don't know how to tell where dead spots are or even how hey appear, but NOTHING grows there.

If that's not it then sorry I can't help....

Hmm.. Nothing is touching the bushes as I said, there are just paths around them. But I have planted more trees and bushes near them - so maybe it's too many in the area?
There's a line of bushes and trees, a single path, the 7 bushes, a single path, and then another line of bushes and trees.

I've read about dead spots but how can it be a dead spot if I already had a bush that grew there fine?

Thanks for all the replies! I'm going to be sad if I have to re-do it all :( Will need to think something up.

Oh, I don't time travel at all and i've grown the 5 bushes vertical so the 6th bush is no where near buildings, cobblestones or any rocks

I don't believe in dead spots. When I've helped friends landscape, we always followed this guide and never ran into any problems:

Wow, that's a great guide. Thanks a lot! I don't understand why the bush can't grow as it's got an empty space beneath it.
I'm going to dig up all the bushes and plant them one by one. If that doesn't work, I'll just need to change my pathway.

I hate dead spots. When you grow something there, you're knowing the restrictions, but it still dies.
