Hi guys, so I have an existing bridge that I will be replacing with a different styled one once I unlock it, but while I'm plot resetting a Villager nearby the bridge I'm wondering if anyone knows how many squares away a house needs to be away from the river in order to place horizontal bridge next to it. I just want to make sure I know I'm plotting my villager in an ok spot because last time I had to do a 16 villager cycle for her because 4 spaces wasn't enough even though that's what I've been told in the past.

Is an extra space needed to be taken in account for the house (so 5 spaces from the river edge) or is it more like 6, 7+?

Any help is appreciated thanks!

Edit: Here is the area I have in mind:

Originally Mira's house was right up against the edge of the path there, which is only 4 spaces away. I'm thinking about trying 6 spaces which is where that dirt patch is. What do you guys think?

i'm not sure, because i've plotted my mayor's house near a bridge and then when i rebuilt it, isabelle said no. it might just be safer to plot the house further away rather then risk putting them closer. there probably isn't an exact number for this, since you are rebuilding a bridge and the numbers may be different- a house can go close to a bridge, but a bridge can't go close to a house. not sure if that made sense, but that's what i think.

Hmm I see... If only there was another better place I could plot her is the problem...

I'm pretty sure that if the house is at least 4 horizontal spaces away from the river then a bridge can be built there.

I'd agree with you, but from past experience 4 spaces was not enough as that's how far away Mira's house originally was, and when I went to demolish and rebuild the bridge in the same place Isabelle wouldn't let me. So it must be at least 5 is what I'm thinking...

So far she keeps plotting way too close (4 spaces or less). I wish she'd plot just a few spaces the the right...

Thanks for trying to help me out guys but I think I've found an answer. I found this post on Gamefaq's (by Fayt980):

For reference, from what I've tested, you need 5 free spaces between the river and a house/building/pwp to be allowed to put a bridge. I tested this since I wanted to replace all 3 of my cobble bridges with brick ones. I tested the spacing on 1 "safe" bridge (had 5 spaces between anything near it, which I expected to be workable, and luckily I was right) by using pwps to check the distances until I couldn't replace the bridge anymore, and 5 was the minimum it would allow me.

I ended up leaving my other bridges as they were, since they were both 4 spaces from a villager's house. The bridges were in too good of positions for me to put brick ones in other places, and I have all my dream villagers so I refuse to kick anybody out to place them. =(

I've seen some people say 4 spaces Isabelle would allow them to place a bridge, but I haven't had that result. I wouldn't hope for 4 to work, as it didn't for me, so to be safe I'd again say you need 5 spaces free. For your other bridges hopefully you can place/replace them ahead of time before villagers move in and block spaces, or you place more perm projects.

Looks like the 4 space rule is not true and that 5 spaces are actually required. I managed to get Mira to plot 7 spaces away from the bridge so I should be good to go. Thanks again! ^.^
