What's the best way to do it? This seems a lot harder than it was in NL.

Two main things!
1) Make them all diagonal of each other
2) The way you get more in this game is by having other people come and water your plants. Having 5 visitors water them will bring these big sparkles, and that means there's 80% chance of a flower spawning, which is absolutely ridiculous. I've gotten 80 hybrids in a day because of this method.
