I've tried doing it both diagonal and straight.

I have a straight row of three red roses. They sprout a pink rose every day.
I have a diagonal pattern of plain white pansies consisting of around 40 pansies, yet I only get one hybrid a day. I have dug up all other flowers except these pansies and the roses. So is diagonal the way to go?

In my experience, diagonals work best. Once you get a pair of hybrids, breed only those because they have a higher chance of producing the same color. When you get more, place them diagonal to the original pair and repeat the process until you have a huge field of diagonals all the same color. Only water one type of hybrid per day using this method. I am able to get 5 hybrids per day doing this, which I believe is the maximum. It may work better for some flowers: it worked great for me with blue and purple pansies, blue roses, and carnations. Hope this helps!

My gardens are like this

And that usually gains me hybrids everyday. Probably 2-5 depending on which ones I water since I have them set up in their own sections
