I have a town layout with only 1 pond and a U shaped river. My town has no dead spots either. In my opinion (also being biased), I think my town has the best layout possible. I don't have an image of it, but if you're really that curious you can visit my DA.

Best town layouts?

The "best town layout" is different for everyone, depending on personal preference. I personally like maps with short rivers and no narrow spaces. I just hate those narrow land strips >.<
Just choose a map that you like the best. Some people will love it, some will hate it. But it only matters whether or not you like it because it's your map, not theirs.
