Had never heard of this but just caught one without even noticing - fishing for money and didn't even realise till I looked at my inventory... how on earth?! Is there a glitch where these just show up or am I just very vacant-minded haha??

They are possibly one of the rarest fish in the game rn. It's got like a 1:90 horse mackerel rate

Rate there is an exaggeration and I do not know the real rate :p

is that a guestimate or do you have stats like that for other fish? If I could know the actual rate for catching some of them, it might help me with a few that I'm still missing!

I've never heard of a glitch like that.

It's possible you were mashing through the catch screen and looked away/zoned out and just missed it. I missed that I caught an oarfish once. I could have swore the shadow I went for was Sea Bass/Olive Flounder sized, but next time I looked in my inventory the oarfish was sitting there.

It's an exaggeration and I'll update it saying ao

I bet it just didn't register as a money fish att because it's small.

if you really want to mess with your brain on how you could have missed it... look up the real ones, they're creepy little buggers. i've managed to catch 2, bait fishing on a rainy night going for the colecanth(130 baits)... they are sooo rare.

I once caught 3 Barreleye and a Tuna within 5 bait. Only 3 Barreleye I've ever caught and have never seen it again even though I only bait fish past 9PM.

Up until last Saturday - when I redecorated my main room to account for feng shui - I had caught one, and that was the first or second night of owning the game. I decided to go fishing that evening after finishing with the yellow, green, and red...managed to catch two. Tried again Sunday evening, and caught two more (and 3 coelacanth). I only fished pier side, and never found one higher than halfway up the map. I now have one on display in my fishing tourney room, and another 3 stored for the next time CJ visits.

Wait these are rare? I've caught so many lmao I think I've caught double the amount of these guys in relation to oarfish (and I've caught a lot of those). Can't seem to find any coelacanths after that first one I put in the museum though

i’ve only caught the barreleye twice and it was literally so difficult. i’ve had better luck with catching coelacanths than i have with those lil weird looking buggers

The contrast between these two lol

I've only caught 3 in my life time

They're much harder to catch than Oarfish or even Stringfish if just because of the horse mackerel being the same shadow size and so common.

Oarfish are not super hard to catch just fish for them on a rainy day and it's not necessary but make use of the pier spot.

Both Oarfish and Football fish have wildly increased encounter rates when it rains in my experience.

The Barreleye? Prepare for pain. It took me a little over 100 minutes and like 80+ horse mackerel to catch one. And then I randomly caught one a week later just fishing for the nook miles task lol.

It always seems to work out that way.

Thanks all - I'm just glad I noticed and didn't go and sell it not realising!! Would have driven me mad trying to catch a second one to donate haha!!
