I'll change anything I have on hand just to see how it looks. I tend to go through all the options in one item, and when that's done I'll pick the one I like best and would look nice in my house or a villager's. Then it goes in storage to give to a villager when they ask for new furniture as it better increases the friendship level.

I got it because I like customizing the stuff I use in my houses. Villagers always comment if you give them a custom piece too, so I like doing that when I can.

It gets a little boring after a while, but whatever suits you.
