Auroras...

So I was time traveling by the hour just now (NOT MY GAME), and I saw an aurora in the sky! It was December 31 then, at night. I forget the exact time. Has anyone else seen this before (without time traveling)? I saw it in someone's sig around here. Does it happen on random nights, or just on New Year's Eve?
