I only release fish if I catch a really good fish without realizing my pockets are full, in which case I will release the least rare/lucrative fish in my pockets regardless of location. If I’m releasing a fish ahead of time for some reason I will release them in their original body of water, but neither situation comes up often for me at all.

I don't usually release fish because I prefer to sell them (unless they're not worth much like the Olive Flounder) but when I do release them it's just funner to throw them into places they shouldn't go. Like releasing an Olive Flounder into a tiny pond lol.

I guess I never looked at it like murder, lol. Only time I release fish is when I have a full inventory, so whatever body of water I’m currently at when that happens is where they end up going! Sorry poor fishes!

I feel uncomfortable displaying fish because most of their tanks are cruelty-sized, yet I'll just yeet the bass wherever if I need to get rid of them. Usually I release them right after catching them though.
