I think Chief is a fox, in the same way that Keaton is a parrot and Savannah is a zebra. They're just technically of different species because it was easier to do that for the game, I assume.

I am a zebra And Tucker is a mammoth - I had him in a category all his own for my pic collection before I realized he was in with the elephants.

I love Tucker so much for that exact reason! If I hadn't ended up loving my starting lazy, I'd try to get Tucker in my town.

Some of the ostriches aren't even ostriches, e.g. Phoebe is a phoenix, Flora is a flamingo, Cranston is a crested ibis
Kyle is some sort of hyena

I also think that Kevin is a warthog and Leonardo is a leopard but I'm not sure. Also, Hopper is a crested penguin, unlike the other penguins, which I think is pretty neat.

Then there are all the villagers that look like food or objects but they don't really count as different species, in my opinion.

You can swing your net around and stuff but obviously there's nothing to water/catch/dig up/shoot? unless you want to try catching the birds but that won't work
As for the pond you can use the net glitch to get back there if I'm not mistaken I've done it before but then I got stuck and had to reset
