I am not buying the cards since they are way too expensive... I did buy some fanmade coins though for very cheap, because I don't want to spend a lot of time island hopping/campsite tricking :')
I haven't gotten any amiibos since the price hike. I started to start collecting the ones I didn't have a half a year before New Horizons came out just to complete my collection, but I forgot about it until they announced that amiibos would work with New Horizons. I was at least able to get all of the special villager cards, but now I wish that I had focused more on the popular villagers.
Japan is getting a re-release of the amiibo cards. I hope that they will decide to re-release them in English too. If not, then I'll have to just shell out the money for fan-made cards so I can at least complete the collection. I would prefer for them to be official though. Mostly for collection purposes.
A friend got me Tipper's card for my birthday. While I'm super happy to have it, I don't think I would have bought it for myself because I like to let the game surprise me when it comes to villagers. I did want to have a snooty move in, though, so it was nice to get her from the campsite and save the nmts I would have spent island hopping.
If having a certain villager would dramatically increase your enjoyment of the game, then there's no real harm in splurging on their card. I'd say go for it!

Why wouldn't you recommend the campsite trick for villagers who have amiibo? If you don't have the amiibo yourself and you don't want to trade for a villager, it is a pretty good way to help narrow down your prospects without island hopping. If you don't TT it will take a long time, but that's pretty much the only downside.
Yeah! I wouldn't mind getting the Japanese ones, but I personally don't read Japanese. So, I wouldn't be able to read their names unless they list the names in other languages and have it in English somewhere on the card. Then again, that makes me kinda want to try to go find a Japanese Velma just so I have her in another language because I think that would be pretty neat.
I was considering buying Olivia's amiibo, but the whole thing is overwhelmingly confusing to me. First of all, I had to find out that they come in blind bags, which is absolutely not what I want since I'm not going to collect them. So I looked for sellers selling them seperately and did indeed find a few offers of Olivia's amiibo which were all around 15 €. However, those cards seemed to be several years older than the New Horizons game? I couldn't find out anything about what that is about, so I decided that I'm way too out of touch for something like amiibo cards

I wouldnt recommend mostly bc of the time it takes (it took me like 2 days to get Raymond.....) tho I guess if trading online isnt an option for someone it is viable! I just could not imagine doing it more than once for villagers I could get from someone online. Tho I guess doing it for tier 1 villagers in general is a good idea if you cant afford the prices
Thats be very cute! having just a collection of ur fave in different languages

They came in blind bags when they were first released for the Welcome Amiibo update for NL I believe? but now people sell them separately! And those cards are still compatible with NH nintendo still hasnt released any new cards! I hope that helps ; u ;

i got chadder and nana’s amiibo cards for $2.99 each, as well as a lot of 6 cards including kabuki and roscoe (+sable and a few others that weren’t dreamies) for $10 altogether. these were all from ebay but i’d say you kinda have to be lucky, bc most are sold out / bottom of the barrel and most of the desirable ones are wildly inflated. but you might find something if you search hard enough! other than that, there are some fan made amiibo on etsy and other sites that might interest you, but you might already be aware of these. good luck finding cards anyhow <3
Why would Blathers be expensive? Not a very useful Amiibo, but I happen to have that one. I got it with a 24 pack on Amazon before Coronavirus started and the prices of Amiibo skyrocketed.
I used to, but the inflated prices drove me to figure out how to make my own amiibo. Turns out its crazy easy. Either way, I'm not giving money to Nintendo... I'll consider buying legit again if they release a new series.
