Anyone else still buying amiibo cards?

I am but I got the majority of my collection early last year when prices were really low. Since New Horizons I’ve gotten a few villagers and some special cards I decided I wanted to add to my collection. The high dollar cards like Ankha, Marshal, Merengue and Fang were already mine either via purchase or trades. So it hasn’t been TOO crazy but when I see unpopular villagers priced around $10 I nope it out of there.

Good deals can be found on ebay or FB groups but you have to hunt.

not cards, but coins- the sanrio coins work the same way and are in abundance for cheap online

I wanted to buy the whole set and kept debating about it but I think the prices are too much :c

I have all of them so it's NBD but new ones I'm worried about since it'll sell faster than concert tickets (coughcoughraymondcoughcough) I hope I can get a hands on them before they ran out (if they decide to release the new villager cards)

Yeah I agree. Welcome Amiibo cards were relatively obtainable in stores until the stock got low after maybe a month. Then they sold out and never were in stock again. Now with so many new fans playing, cards for new villagers will sell fast and if history repeats itself with Nintendo, they won’t restock or a restock will be once on a rare occasion.

I'd be so sad if they just release it once oof. I'll just rely on nfc again since there's no way I'll hand over money to scalpers. 😬

Yeah if they do have stocking issues and I can’t get hold of them, I’ll head over to Etsy. I was lucky enough to get the Sanrio set on Game.co.uk in 2016 though so I hope I can keep my luck haha.

Is the purpose of amiibos just for villagers? Or is it some type of collectible too?

I've heard about the crazy prices and I've always wondered why people would buy them for almost a hundred dollars. Why are they so expensive and important?

They are collectible cards with chips that also let you scan villagers into the campsite. You can find fan made ones that aren’t from Nintendo for cheaper if you just want them for the villager. I got packs of the official cards back in 2016. My Walmart amd Target sold them for like $6 back around when the Welcome Amiibo update hit New Leaf.

Well they are to get villagers but people like collecting em and treat them like collectibles! Tho I dont think the price comes from it being a collectible I think it depends on how popular the villager is (so like Marshal's card will be pretty expensive)

Ahh thanks for clarifying!! 😃Makes sense to me now!

I guess having an amiibo is easier than having to "dreamie" hunt. :o

I have a lot of amiibos but I honestly like mystery island hunting more than scanning amiibos in. There are still a few less popular villagers out there I don’t have amiibos for that are fun to hunt. It’s always nice knowing you can have your favorite villagers at any time though too.

I could imagine! I heard mystery island hopping is quite fun haha!

And I guess you can scan the card more than once? o:

I personally like the idea of having the cards because like, if something happens to your game file/Switch (which would be horrible, god forbid...) at least you have some of your dreamies backed up on the cards in a way... ^^

My prized possession is a Rodeo amiibo card lol. This is one occurrence where I’m glad Rodeo is overlooked as he is, because I got him for $7. (Which is quite a bargain, considering some cards like Marshal’s can sell for $100 or more...)

I would love to have a big collection of my dreamies and even some that I just really like and aren’t necessarily dreamies! I just wanna have them lol... too bad they’re so costly, especially now it seems. :(

I never bought them! They're a bit too expensive for me to justify moving a villager in with (since you can always save up to buy villagers online) and are kind of small for a collector's piece. Too small to hang up as a nice poster; and how often will I flip through a card book?

I was considering buying some fan-made cards over Etsy, but those are a bit expensive as well. I was looking into AliExpress and those ones look more reasonable (though of course, the quality of the art is nowhere near the same). In the end, especially with our current situation and with how long shipping takes, I decided not to in the end.

I'd rather just save up real $$ for other Animal Crossing merch like posters or plushies.

I haven't bought any amiibo cards yet. I don't really plan on buying any unless and until the prices for them go down. I'm not in any rush to get any particular villager, and I'm perfectly content with just paying for them with in-game currency if I end up looking for a specific villager, even if they have an amiibo card associated with them.
