I never use a guide when Redd docks in my island (which is a lot more often now, thanks to the newest update!) I like to google a bunch of keywords about the paintings when I don’t know what they’re called. Ie, “winter scene hunters lake” and I can usually find them pretty quickly that way. Then I compare the differences between all the in-game paintings and the real counter-parts.
It reminds me of these activity books I used to have called “art auction mysteries” where you would compare the (sometimes) fake paintings in the front of the book to the real ones in the back and try to find all the differences. What about you guys, do you do it like this too?
I was thinking of doing that but I've gone an even more extreme way if not even looking up anything. I just look at the art and see if there's something off about it. I've gotten it wrong twice and got it right 2 or 3 times But I refuse to have any kind of help.
I don't do it because I don't see Redd as often as I would like, but I love the idea! I had some art history classes so I do like to guess if it's real or fake before confirming it!
I do this now and I find it fun, I even asked my dad if he could spot anything odd on a painting when he came once!
I used to use a guide for NL. In CF I didn't even look at guides and just winged it but I'd rather guarantee a real one when he comes to add to the art gallery
I do exactly that - And it makes finding out which is fake much more fun! It also makes getting the real art much more rewarding as well: You aren't 'cheating' your way into discovering it by having someone else pointing it out for you.
I wish you could see the actual paintings' names before donating to the museum. Because I would LOVE to Google each one and figure it out myself. But when you look up "new horizons [DESCRIPTION] painting" it always comes up with a guide or something that just shows you the answer.
Honestly sometimes I do search to see the differences but other times I’m just too lazy to Google all the keyword law so I just take my chances and sometimes I’m wrong sometimes I’m right but sometimes I just can’t be bothered
I always look up the real artwork first and try to figure it out on my own, but I also check my answer by looking at a guide before I actually make my purchase.
I have not, though that's an interesting idea! I tend to rush and try to be effective... wish I had more patience.
At first I would try to guess, usually picking the painting I most liked... if it's genuine great, if not, I used it as decor. But now I just use a guide.
Sometimes yeah. I've taken a lot of art history courses so I know which ones are fake.
However there are some pieces that I've never learned about. Usually I look around and guess which one is real, then when I enter his boat the second time, reveal by a guide if I was correct.
I don't do that. A lot of them are easy to know what's real and what's fake. I just pull out the camera and zoom in on them because I don't feel like asking if I can take a closer look.
Redd comes around so infrequently that I don't want to risk getting a fake painting the one time he visits my island. If you're interested in art history though, it could be fun to see if you can spot the difference yourself! If I were to use that method though, I'd double check with an online guide after I made my guesses and before buying to make sure that my guesses were correct.
Yes, I love doing this! It's honestly one of my favorite parts about NH. I'm kinda-sorta knowledgeable about fake/bootleg video games, so I'm pretty familiar with how to play the "spot the difference" game. I was genuinely excited when the update trailer showed that you could zoom in and move the camera around to look for tells, and that the tells are different from NL. I'm also happy that this incredibly niche skill set I have finally has another use. : P
I also like looking for fakes just by looking at the composition of the art. Occasionally, even if I don't know the actual name of the piece, I can tell that the composition is off/not what I'd expect on a fake. I tend to prefer those fakes as opposed to fakes that just, like, have a random addition to it; those aren't as fun.
