Lucky kind of used to be such a case.
I was extremely happy when I found him early on in the game, he was the first villager that for me could ever have been considered a dreamy and back then there were only two, maybe three villagers overall that I really wanted. So of course I was ecstatic. However, it pretty soon turned out that Lucky wasn't as animated as basically any other villager and therefore lacked charm. I did consider replacing him, especially since by that point I had figuered out that there were A LOT of adorable lazies, but I was hesitant since he worked very well with my theme and I figuered that due to his popularity it could be difficult to get him back.
Weirdly enough, after that initial disappointment which lasted for several weeks, I now love him. I don't know what changed (maybe it's the fact that he gave me his picture?), but now I do not at all want to part with Lucky and I'm glad I didn't.
Another case that didn't turn around in the end was Agnes. Found her on a Mystery Island, thought she was cute and invited her over, thinking that she might be a keeper. The first thing I did when she moved in was buying her a pink Labelle coat and sending it over via mail. Apparently she loved it, because whenever I saw her (which sadly wasn't often), she was wearing it. She never showed her face around the plaza. If I wanted to say hello, I had to go visit and hope she was at home, sometimes she would be out taking solitary walks along the beach. She was just so anti-social! She never talked to anyone, never showed her face, never came running up to me. But she was wearing the coat I gave her, like taking gifts wasn't an issue for her. I felt so taunted by the fact that she apparenty hated anyone and everything except for that coat
Of course she was the first one to tell me that she wanted to move out and even though I would have liked to give her a bit of a longer trial periode, I let her leave. She took off into the void, taking no good memories but her precious coat with her.
