Animal villager models

I've noticed that there are so many similarities between villagers in a particular species. For example, dogs always have ears flopped down when there are also dogs in reality that can have pointy ears. Yeah, there are slight differences between others like Ankha, Drago, etc. but those are far and few in between.

The point I'm trying to get across is, should Nintendo make unique models for villagers to pop out more? I feel like they would have more freedom when designing a particular villager, especially the new ones. It kinda irks me when superhero villagers wear helmets but are really just coloured over their heads.

Any thoughts?

I'm biased as heck on this because I've been making plushies of the villagers and selling them. Having all of the villagers from a certain species being the same shape is a godsend, it would be so difficult otherwise... Likewise, it's probably easier on them given that there are over 300 different characters. I think they should keep things as they are but maybe add some new species.

They're already semi open to making slightly different models within species. I mean I'm only really thinking Julian with his horn, but I think they'll stick to the trend of only having very few special villagers with differences, which will probably do the same as NL and have them be really desired and favoured. XD

Personally I don't mind the lack of shape variety but if maybe half of the dogs were floppy eared and half were sticky up eared I'd be fine with that as well. I don't think every villager should have a physical difference at all. But yeah, more species would be a plus!

I can see how it's easy to just slap a recolor on a similar shape and only once in a while have a different feature on a villager. Personally, I don't mind, as I think the villagers are varied enough with colors alone. I like that the species can be easily recognizable that way. I do second the idea that we need more villager species though. I still am holding out for bats. If they can have octopi, they can have bats!!!

Bats are exactly what came to mind for me too!!! Right away! Also, foxes.

It would be cool if they made animals of the same species more distinct but that would take a lot of work. They have made good progress with the different proportions since New Leaf though so maybe they will make it happen!

I think they could keep the current villagers as they are now, and add some new ones that are kinda different, like different dogs, cats, bunnies..

I would love for some of the villagers to stand out a bit more from their species! Maybe not all of them, but having a bit of variety is always nice. I don’t really mind them having similar models, but other things that can make them more distinct would be great to see!

Yesss. This request is a staple of my old wishlists.

It feels like people are overestimating the difficulty of this, they could just have an alt model for a couple of the species (terrier/pointy ear dog, lop rabbit, longhair cat, and lioness come to mind) and be done. I'd feel bad for people whose favorite was retconned to a new model though.
